UIC or Indiana State for ECON Major?

Hey all,

I'm a 20 year old student currently at a very nice junior college. I'll be transferring out next January(2013), and was just wondering if anyone had any info. on the University of Illinois-Chicago and Indiana State University.

I'm from the south suburbs of Chicago, and I love the city. However, I'm look to start anew my girlfriend is moving here from Brazil so I am keeping all options open. I was mostly trying to see the education quality, rather than the 'social life' aspect. I'm not much of a party-goer, and usually stay in, read books, spend time with close friends, watch most Chicago-based sports teams. I'm looking to major in economics, and I know UIC would be much better than ISU regarding internships and getting my name out there. However, I know the campus is rough and UIC is lower on the list of Chicago-based universities. My grades aren't great, but they definitely have an improving trend the past year or so. Just want to make sure, in this tough economy, I won't go to a college and get an education that doesn't do much because I can't get my name out and get internships because of college location.

Any information on either of these schools and their education quality is much appreciated. Also, if anyone knows anything about the campus safety, I'm pretty well confident I won't have any run-ins in either area, however since my girlfriend will be new to the country, I don't want to worry about her on her own.

Thanks much,
J

How in the world will you afford IU as an out of state student?

Hi Jworld, UIC isn’t a rough campus and on the lower end of the universities in the Chicago Greater Area, there are many more that have lower admission requirements, i.e CSU as one. Comparing ISU with UIC, they are on par. University of Illinois Circle Campus (original name), is an excellent school to attend, nothing to be ashame of. It has an excellent engineering program.

Misread the OP. ISU does have an IL scholarship which brings tuition down to $5K/semester.

I appreciate the info. Does anyone have any information on the economics majors there? Would going to ISU take away job opportunities/internships/networking that would be more readily available in the city?
