@Nevets04 No one at my school believes me when I tell them how awful the chances are. They like to think all the Ivies are absolutely the worst, stratified my major or not.
Sorry but before posting anything, please get facts right. It’s only shows how much you know of the American education system and lowers your credibility as a giver of “counsel”. General comment, peace out
Alright guys, Illinois resident here. I have a 34 ACT and lots of EC’s, 5 Leadership roles, Good GPA, 200 + hours volunteering, 100+ hours interning with a cardiologist, an obscene # of awards and honors. I know I’ll get in (not trying to be cocky, just trying to be realistic) and I know UIUC is a good school academically and socially. But I want to know, what made all of you apply here? What makes UIUC your number one choice?
CS program is one of the top in the country. S also likes the location.
All top schools, whether they be ivy or not, have different bars for different populations. Minorities, people from developing countries, athletes etc often are able to get in with lower scores when compared to say Asian males from east coast prep schools. This means a girl from Qatar may indeed get into a school like Princeton with lower scores than their average. You still have to score high enough to assure them you can handle the work, but being from an under represented population is a definite hook that can help.
@sidthekid7 MSE is usually in the top 5 in the country according to some rankings, and its dept. is one in a handful that allow undergrads to continue to an MEng rather than an MS. I am not sure about continuing on to grad school, so having a professional degree would allow me to choose without too many consequences.
Also, Newman Hall. It would be nice to be around others who share my faith for once.
The best part for me? It’s not in Metro Atlanta. You have no idea how awful rush hours that last 3-4 hours are.
Really hoping we all can get in, but the chances for engineering are rather bleak.
@samlan16 I was kidding about the 1-2% acceptance rate, but yeah CS is really competitive. I’m OOS and my family doesn’t understand why I’m interested in this school, because they simply refuse to learn anything about it.
@Indijat
I’m not going to post my stats here, but if you’re curious you can PM me or check out the Stanford Decisions Thread at this link, http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/discussion/comment/19065744/#Comment_19065744
I was rejected for Stanford EA.
For those who applied to CS, the admit rate this year is around 7.5% https://www.quora.com/Is-the-UIUC-selective-for-CS
Chances for my friend?
General Studies, in-state
3.75 UW GPA
30 ACT
Missed a semester due to having meningitis.
EC’s:
Cross Country
Volleyball
Golf
High ranking positions in several clubs
@PitLV2109 That is impressively selective. I used to think UIUC would be my safety school. Turns out its one of the most difficult.
Pretty hype for Friday. I may be taking a quiz when the results come out. Which will be good, I guess. I think the servers will be okay within an hour or so. Make sure you guys don’t refresh (not even kidding, it slows it down for everyone)
Yes, no doubt CS is growing not only at UIUC but all the top 20 programs, look at Univ of Maryland, 200 students in 2013 and now this year they are projecting 400 plus… same for Purdue. Some one on Reditt who reads apps at UIUC mentioned that this year they have received 4100 apps for CS. Give that the yield rate is going to be round 50 % , they would admit about 600 students for a yield of 300, makes it about 15% acceptance rate, that is what some one was told in the Illini VIP visit. UIUC has been liberal in admitting OOS students students though, last year they admitted about 45% students from OOS. Also, I read that # of applicants in CS department from CA and NJ have doubled this year compared to last year… this should be interesting…!!!
ADMITTED TO VA TECH MECHANICAL ENGINEERING…!!..FOLKS…!!
After being deferred from Princeton!!.!!
@potatoheadhala @pallavijaniani
Please check merit system in India to ensure what number of students get what percentage of marks!
Again brothers, sisters and yet all others, I will GUARANTEE u all on the basis of very reliable evidences that 2100+ and 95%+ leave u with no margin whatsoever for getting rejected on basis of NUMBERS.
In other words, scores do matter but are only an objective showcase off ur ability and never a deciding factor in admissions unless u are below my words.
-Good luck to everybody worried about scores!!
@PitLV2109 Isn’t 7.5% the enrollment rate? The admit rate should be higher, since they definitely admitted more than 300 students for 300 spots.
Omg I am so nervous…
34 ACT, 3.75 UW, 4.45 W, 15 AP Classes, lots of leadership in EC (volunteering, etc.), really good essays and recs, OOS, applying for biomedical engineering… do I have a shot???
@Indijat
I think you are confused about what you want to say. You said that you can’t be rejected from HYPSM and other top schools with top scores - there are many instances where that has precisely been the case.
Stanford itself rejects 70% of 2400 SAT 1s. Again, an obvious contradiction to what you are saying.
If you’re saying that you know a lot of people who did not get those scores and were still admitted to MIT and Harvard, then they must have something truly exceptional - beyond numbers and grades.
And if you meant to say that scores don’t matter beyond a point, then I agree with you, because they don’t. Whether that point is a 2100 is still up for debate though.
If you are saying that, even if your scores are far lower than the 25% of the incoming class, you have the same chances as everyone else - if you have no hooks, mind you - then I’m sorry to say that you’re wrong.
@potatoheadhala Exactly bro…!
Did someone just contradict himself
