Does anyone know what the admission rate for the UIUC computer science major is? I know it’s lower than the university’s general rate.
Thanks.

^ this might be helpful. According to this thread, it seems like it might be around ~55%
Actually, I think I’ll expand on the question. I applied to Computer science but was denied and instead accepted into engineering physics. If anyone could tell me what my odds of being allowed to transfer into the computer science department would be (assuming good performance in college, mostly A’s, etc.), I would appreciate it.
And thanks, YuiHirasawa
Actually, the CS admit rate is much lower than the general Engineering admit rate at UIUC. A Prof said that CS rejects kids who are more qualified than the average admits in some other Engineering majors.
Here’s what you have to meet: https://wiki.cites.illinois.edu/wiki/display/undergradProg/Transferring+Into+Undergraduate+Computer+Science+Majors+from+Other+UIUC+Departments
It’s a high bar. Most hopefuls do not successfully transfer in. About 50 a year do.
BTW, that link from 2010 is waaaaaay out of date. That thread says Engineering gets about 3400 applicants. This year, CS by itself has that many applicants. Consequently, the CS admit rate has plunged.
Well… crap. That does make me feel a lot better about being denied admission though, so thank you.
i got rejected. 1920 sat ( 700M 620CR 600W) and 3.8 gpa. didn’t even get into DGS
@thatdudeinhs, are you OOS? Did you put down a second major?
I was rejected from CS at UIUC
SAT 2230 (800CR, 780MAT, 650 WR)
ACT 34
Top 5% class, 4.3 weighted GPA
I was accepted into the James Scholar Honors College for General Studies at UIUC, but will most likely go to my second choice school. I am sure I want to study CS and because so few are allowed to transfer in at UIUC, it is too risky for me to go General Studies.
What I have heard is the CS admission rate last year was in single digit.
Yes, be wary of outdated links for UIUC’s engineering programs. The engineering college’s application pool has more than trippled iover the last five years and admission rate for engineering overall has fallen below 45%. CS is not single digits but is in the 30s%. Where you get single digit percentages is transfers into CS. CS is currently an impacted major, meaning it is considered to have too many students for resources available, an issue that impacts transfer far more than freshman admission. Transfering from one engineering major to CS is a little easier but still difficult for now.
@billcsho, yeah, I was wrong, though someone heard that the CS acceptance rate in the RD round (after the EA round) was single digits last year.
However, 30%+ for CS is too high these days. That was the admit rate 2 cycles ago. Last year, it was more like 25%. This year (with only 1 round of admissions), I think it will come in around 20% or a little above for CS.
Not sure it is actually easier for other majors in Engineering to transfer in to CS because now the CS faculty has set the bar so high that they (so far) aren’t turning away anyone who meets the bar.
However, transferring in to CompE from another Engineering major may be easier and you can/will take a decent number of software classes in that major (as well as a lot of hardware/EE classes). But if you can handle the physics, CompE may be a smarter major to aim for.
It’s is 8-10% this year for CS. I got waitlisted; 3.75 GPA, 32 ACT
If you really want to study CS you should look elsewhere. Students even enrolled in CS programs at UIUC are having a tough time getting their courses according to a friend of mine whose son is in computer engineering. The next best option after CS engineering is to take CS thru the LAS department but unless you are admitted directly into the CS +X porgrams, you chances of getting into the CS classes will be slim.
I have heard the admission rate last year was single digit and the average admission ACT score was 34+.
The acceptance rate this year for CS in both LAS and CoE was around 10%. Specifically for CoE, I would expect it to be like 6-7%. Source: I was admitted this year to CS in CoE and those admitted to CS got an email from Lenny Pitt taking about this.
This while CS will almost certainly be taking in the largest cohort ever in history at UIUC. The hankering for top CS programs these days is insane.
got the same e-mail as @UATenista , can confirm that about 3000 students applied and 300 got in, for CS.
Just curious how admission rate is calculated. If there are 300 spots - surely they send out more than 300 letters of admission. Is acceptance rate calculated on actual admissions or offered?
