You would be wrong on saying that UIUC provides better career prospects than Purdue. Purdue is known for it’s Coop programs, and relationships with industry in general. BIL’s are both successful UIUC grads(one ChemE PHD, one CompE)…great school, but even they say that Purdue is the one when it comes to placing students in job. Websites…well, they all SAY that they have great career services… Purdue, and a few other schools like NEU, Waterloo, and maybe Drexel, among many others, have been doing it for decades.
I would not pick UW over Maryland. The CS building is overcrowded, and mediocre. They are building a new one, and it will probably be really nice, but it won’t be finished till 2024 at the earliest.

S22 is in the same situation. All CS.
OOS : NE, Purdue, UMD, UW-Madison.
In-State : CalPoly-SLO, UC Santa Barbara, UC Santa Cruz.
Based on counselor recommendation, he is actively reaching out his HS seniors students who are attending these colleges, at least a couple from each college, through linked-in messages, chats and calls. Next, based on the feedback he had shortlisted two in-state and two OOS colleges. Further, we already had in-state campus tours of SLO and UCSB. In the next 7-10 days we’ll be in UW-Madison and UMD for a tour.
For questions or concerns regarding course selection at UW-Madison as mentioned in above messages (including reddit thread link) both of my S22 HS seniors attending there :
- Referred him to Course Enrollment FAQ under cs.wisc.edu mentioning “Many courses taught by Computer Sciences are restricted to degree-seeking UW-Madison CS students during the initial weeks of enrollment.”
- Moreover, they added that registration is simple and they make you go through soar (https://soar.wisc.edu) and suggest picking an early date to grant that you get the courses you want.
niche rankings are …
I like Brown’s super CS rankings more, and you can even turn on/off a subfield.
