@srparent15 Regarding the $5,500 Federal Direct Loan, how do colleges determine what part of it is SUBSIDIZED loan and what part is UNSUBSIDIZED loan? Some state colleges and Penn State offered my son $5,500 loan with both SUB and UNSUB components. However, other colleges (Purdue, VT) offered the entire $5,500 as UNSUB loan. If this loan is provided by Fed and the amount of loan is determined by income/assets reported on FAFSA, why do different colleges provide different compositions of SUB and UNSUB loans?
My D received an email stating that she is selected to Grainger Engineering James Scholar Honors program
I think they informed it through email
My D got into Grainger Engineering James Scholar. She got an email today. What is the biggest attraction of this program?
@VRN2021 @school25 Grainger Engineering James Scholar:
Basically for engineering, James scholar is useful to get priority for certain classes which are otherwise not possible due to sheer demand for that class. My S is James Scholar and that is the best benefit for engineering.
I have heard for LAS it adds up value if you are on pre-med track, but I can’t verify that info.
My daughter received an email this morning saying she was selected for the Grainger James Scholar program, she applied EE. Looks like our financial aid/scholarship info hasn’t been finished though. We are OOS. 34 ACT, 4.0 GPA unweighted, some APs, some extracurriculars. I think it would be a great place for her, but I don’t think it’s in her top 3. We are going to try to fit in a quick visit, she’s never been to Illinois let alone U-C.
Honestly, no idea! We haven’t even received anything from Illinois yet, but I know it’s going to be the same story, $5,500 loan he can take, which we will pass on. Until my kid’s assets start to get depleted there is no way he is going to qualify for anything I realize and we’re not looking at loans.
Maybe it has to do with how much Federal Aid they have been given, but I really don’t know. I don’t remember how it was when my ex husband was in medical school either. I just remember he had tons of them and some accrued interest from day 1, some didn’t start accruing until after medical school, but none had to start to be paid back until after residency.
Don’t they also get the Honors dorms?
Have James Scholars for Gies been notified yet?
approx how many percent of admitted Grainger students gets the Grainger Engineering James Scholar? DS also got an email notification about the award today. Can one expect some merit scholarship to come?
@PPofEngrDr , @srparent15 Thanks for the information about the benefits of being a James Scholar.
@newzar we received the merit aid information last Friday.
Is campus tours totally stopped? My son really want to visit (not the virtual tour) before committing. Is it even possible?
have any international applicants gotten an invite for James Scholar?
Nope, I didn’t and I’m waiting for some sought of communication regarding that.
Nah. there is no such thing. LLCs are different. Your degree/diploma doesn’t have its mention. You can write James Scholar on resume, LinkedIn page etc…, but no one outside of UIUC knows what is James Scholar. It implies that you have above average GPA, but duh, when you put GPA on resume that is already known to industry what is above average, so to use James Scholar on resume can be a waste of space.
Same. Pretty much all my friends got it except me :/.
They don’t have Honors dorms there? For some reason I thought they did and would’ve thought James Scholars would get to stay in them.
I have heard also being a James Scholar doesn’t really equate to much extra and not as far as $ but people can just look it up in the website.
Honors dorms (Nugent?) are for Campus Honors Program and if you join Honors LLC, not James Scholar.
Edit: Apparently, James Scholar may choose to sign up for Honors LLC (provided enough space left in LLC), by virtue of LLC one can sign up for Nugent, and now Wardall too from fall 2021. So key is to join Honors LLC.
Next year the Honors LLC will be housed in the newly renovated Wardall. You have to be in the CHP or a James scholar to live there.
This is a shame - I visited this past weekend and Nugent hall has a great location next to all the other dorms and the recreation center. It looks like Wardall is on the opposite end of campus I really hope they don’t move the Honors LLC there
