UIUC - EA applicants Class of 2025

Does anyone have any solid insight into the PREP program? I was accepted to it as an alternate but I’m not sure whether it’s worth it or not.

Yes and No, it all depends on individual intended major.

Daughter got into UIUC, NEU, CASE, Ohio State for electrical Engg program as OOS . We heard by April 1, uiuc might announce any awards but didn’t received any email. so 0 aid.

what is is the reputation NEU for the EE program? is it worth the cost. I know uiuc is up there.

not considering Ohio state as it offered admission to pre engg program and you have to apply again at the end of freshmen year for the major.

Case we heard the career services doesnt really help/ push students for better internships/coops. Thank you for your response.

What is your instate school and how did admission go?

instate California, UCSB and UCDavis were admit. We were looking to explore possibilities outside state.

how is price comparison between UCs and OOS schools?

they are around 15k more from instate. So yeah were looking if NEU has good reputation for this program and is worth the money? Appreciate your response.

I though UIUC might extend some scholarship but not sofar.

Thanks,

Appreciate

sorry, don’t know that much about NEU EE. Assuming that you are taking loans, there is no point of adding another 60K burden on you for OOS. Your travel cost and time also should be a factor between CA and MA/IL. Also UCs provide tech sector base, should you pivot to CompE. Compare UIUC EE annual success report with NEU and see what you find.

it is easy to switch major at uiuc? i have no interest in engineering nor gies though…

UIUC is stingy for merit and few get it, so I wouldn’t count on it.

Easy to switch from Gies/Grainger to anything else, yes but not between the two so easily. So if you’re not interested in Business or Engineering, then changing majors is not an issue.

Thanks , yea it’s for Grainger . We confirmed again they said all awards have been sent out by 4/1. So no luck (

DS21 has been admitted to his second choice major (Undeclared Engineering) and waitlisted for 1st choice (CS). Of late he seems open to considering Computer Engineering (CE). Questions for the group: Is CE also an “impacted” major like CS? How easy would it be to get into CE from Undeclared?

Relatively easier, achieve 3.5+ GPA in freshman 1st sem, during freshman spring sem apply to transfer, maintain 3.5+ GPA in freshman spring sem, start 2nd year in intended major. Recently they have changed transfer procedure for CS, believe CopmE is still relatively easier.

Thanks! Transfer to CS seems pretty onerous.

Is the 3.5+GPA specific to computer engineering? On the FAQ page it lists > 2.0 as the
requirement (higher the better of course).

"Engineering Undeclared | The Grainger College of Engineering | UIUC

If I’m in First Year Engineering: Undeclared, will the grades I earn my first year influence the choices I have for a major?

Students in the Undeclared option must be in good academic standing (minimum GPA of 2.0) in order to declare a major during the spring of their first year. They also need to have taken the classes needed to qualify for their majors of interest. We will try to honor Undeclared students’ requests for placement within the engineering majors.

However, we cannot guarantee that every student in the Undeclared option will be placed in their first-choice major, because of high demand for some majors. Earning high grades may make it easier for you to get into a high-demand major."

You are right there is not a stone number, but higher GPA provides better odds, hence 3.5+, 2.0 is a just placeholder and won’t give you guarantee for CompE or even Nuclear.

Good to know… How difficult is a 3.5 at UIUC engineering?

I would say for people placed in Undeclared, 3.5 should be doable with sincere efforts. Slacking in 1st sem won’t help. Play little defensive, aka don’t push for higher classes.

How does UIUC Engineering compare with Virginia Tech Engineering, if an OOS student has to decide between the two?
