I was accepted to both of these schools for computer engineering and after the scholarship I received, the prices are about the same, but I've been hearing that the UIUC computer engineering is significantly better than RPI's. Can anyone offer me some advice and information pertaining to which school would be better suited for me? What are the top employers for graduates of each, starting salaries, etc. I don't really care about school size, but will be able to play on the RPI basketball team since it's DIII.

Also, I’ve only been to the RPI campus and I like the school itself, but not so much Troy.

Same question. Troy seems to be far from big cities (isn’t it?)

What I’m considering about RPI is its ranking… I have no idea whether it’s good to major EE in RPI or not. UIUC ranked way higher than it >_<

If you really care about the rankings, then UI seems like the place to go. But we are picking between Georgia Tech and RPI, and I’m leaning towards RPi. It’s a relatively small school, has a great reputation, and the students are not “just numbers.” I have called or e-mailed there several times and get a close to immediate response. With state schools that doesn’t tend to happen. When we went to visit, everyone at PI seemed really nice, and the students went out of their way to help.

When daughter #2 matriculated at UIUC a couple of years ago, we were absolutely startled when our phone calls were answered immediately by “live,” friendy and helpful people. For such a big school, they are incredibly responsive. We were NEVER put on hold or dumped into voice mail. Swear.

Savant,

Good to hear UIUC was responsive. UMD was also fairly responsive, but Georgia Tech not so much. When I did get a live person, they often couldn’t answer my questions, either. To be fair, there was one department that went above and beyond on April 30th, but I seemed to wait days for return calls. I’ve read other posts that indicated similar problems with GT.
Hopefully sonelone has made his decision by now ansd is excited to e off to college soon.
