UIUC or UW Biology major?

So does anyone know which has the better biology program. I am torn between UIUC and UW. Financially UIUC is becoming the better option, but I can't seem to choose, because my heart is set on UW Seattle, but my parent's and brother are sure that UIUC will be the better option in the long run. Anyone think they can help me figure out which college is better in the long run since I want to go into medicine, I figured that University of Washington has the highly ranked Medical School, and although they don't have preference over their undergraduate students, it's still an amazing school. HELP??!

My bro went to Washington for pre-med then med…He says he highly recommends it, and he says its much better than UIUC, where my little brother goes (dumb one in the family). You have to understand the financial investment is worth it in the long run because you get a better experience and education which results in a better time and higher MCAT scores. Therefore, you will be able to go to med school easy. Honestly, I think med schools do prefer their undergraduate students but they just dont say it…and my bro got a lot of connections in Washington to the med schools during his undergraduate

Hey thank you so much for your input, it puts a lot in perspective for me. Now all I have to do is convince my parents. I appreciate it!

Lol. The quality of advice on CC has degraded rather severely in my years here. UW is not going to provide “a better experience and education” because some guy on the internet has a brother at Illinois who’s dumb. (Incidentally, there’s good correlation in intelligence between biological brothers. The above sample gives no reason for us to speculate otherwise.)

Neither has any real prestige outside of graduate-level research in a few areas and both have 40k students, ruining any chance of a personalized education (which isn’t necessarily a bad thing outside of humanities). You can try all you want to convince yourself that there’s some significant difference in academics, but you’re only kidding yourself.

So really, you answered your own question with “my heart is set on UW Seattle”. Have fun in Seattle. I have some Microsoft friends living there. It’s a rather nice city.

I live in Seattle and the word is Udub does not prefer its own undergrads for Med School. Quite the opposite.

In general, med schools show little to no preference for their own undergrads given that there are equally or better qualified students from other schools.

now i feel like an idiot, just trying to convince myself that uw is the school i want to go to, and willing to read or hear anything. well uiuc is 99% more likely at this point because my parents are sort of guilt tripping me, but i’ve been to uiuc and i know that i will like it either way, even if i am set on uw seattle. i know uw does not prefer their students, and i know all of that already, but i am just not convinced with uiuc yet. they have a challenging bio program, financial aid at this point for me is going to be the deciding factor and uw hasn’t sent financial aid letters yet, so ill just have to wait to decide.

also no one has really answered my question in which has the better biology program in terms of better professors, resources, research opportunities, class sizes, etc.

My info would be UDub is better in bio areas. Washington is Top 15 and UI is more Top 30. Also Seattle>>>>Chambana and Udub is becoming more national. Most OOS at Illinois are there for engineering and many are internationals.

Okay everybody its $42,037 to go to university of washington, now is still worth it when you only have financial aid that is the:

FED DIRECT SUB STAFFORD LOAN: 3500 per year
FED DIRECT UNSUB STAFFORD LOAN: 2000 per year
FEDERAL DIRECT PARENT LOAN: 27403 per year

I don’t think it’s worth the debt, but i really want to go…
U of is 33,028 or something…

42k is only 27% more than 33k…so if you think about it it is not that much of an increase for the experience… Tell your parents it will benefit you in the long run, and anyways uiuc is increasing their tuition in the next few years. If you want to go to uw, you should go because the tuition is not that much of a difference…Think about it like this too…you can get scholarships after freshmen year for good grades…

If you go to uw, you will look forward to it all summer and you will WANT to succeed…
