I haven’t, but I will be looking for a research position as soon as I get there. I think such questions are best asked in person. I feel good about my chances. I’m an honors student and I’m spending this summer doing an internship at Fermilab, so I’m hoping I can find something quickly. I’ll only have 2.5 years at UIUC, and I want to get as much out of it as I can.
Thats good but you should apply through PURE and ISUR. Start as early as you can, I guess

Interesting, I’ve never seen this program before. I’m not an engineering major, but it looks like some of these programs are open to physics majors as well. I haven’t seen anything like this anywhere in the LAS or UIUC Physics sites. I think you’re likely right that one should start on this as early as possible. It wouldn’t hurt to reach out to some professors now. Thanks for the link.
No problem. yeah I am doing same because the worst could happen is that the professor will say no. At least he will get to know
our name and probably give some suggestions to become a good candidate for future.
Yes, this is very true. Putting yourself out there as soon as possible is only going to be beneficial.
I discovered that persistence pays off. I emailed Math Advising because I was trying to get into an honors section of MATH 347 - Fundamental Mathematics, which is basically an intro to upper level math and formal proofs. At first they turned me down because they said they don’t like to accept first semester transfer students into honors math. But I tried again and asked the to reconsider, and I ended up getting approved. This is the prerequisite to the full honors math sequence, which I intend to complete. I’m very excited about this
amazing, has anyone attended the registration yet ?
how was it ? what did u guys do ?
I did a few weeks ago. It went well. There really wasn’t much to it. First there was a general welcome to UIUC talk from one of the main advising people, then a talk from someone in financial aid. Then we broke apart by college and had a separate presentation from someone in advising in our respective colleges. After that we met with advisers in our specific department and registered for classes. Then we had lunch, took a campus tour, and that was it.
@comfortablycurt This is an old thread. But it’s hard getting anyone to respond to my recent posts. But basically, I’m planning on doing CC for about a year or two and then transferring into UIUC’s Computer Science degree. I have a HS GPA of 3.7. Unfortunately though, my ACT scores only reached up to 23. I can’t apply directly to UIUC or even UIC for that matter since I already did one semester of CC with about 12 or 13 credit hours in a different state before moving to Illinois. Any suggestions on how I can complete my classes as fast as possible and have a very good look on getting accepted? Thanks!!
