Hi, i am wondering for which school has a better engineering reputation for engineering companies.

Overall, Michigan has a much better reputation as a school. If you're not sure about engineering it's better to go to Michigan because the liberal arts program is also very strong. In Engineering though, UIUC is more prestigious overall. But liberal arts academics are marginal there. What field of engineering are you interested in? It also depends on the department.

For:
Aerospace: Michigan is MUCH BETTER
Mechanical: Michigan is slightly better
Electrical/CS/Comp E: UIUC is MUCH BETTER
Civil: UIUC is MUCH better (#1)
Material science: UIUC is MUCH BETTER (#1)

Dont know much about the rest such as Eng. Physics, Nuc E. etc. etc.

I did mechanical engineering. UIUC is ranked 6th for mecheng while umich is ranked 3rd. Is their a big difference between a rank 3 and 6?

Not really. Both are well respected. I did 3 years at UIUC. First 2 years I was in Mechanical Engineering. My third year i switched to Aerospace. I ended up leaving UIUC my senior year (girlfriend factor) and transferring to Georgia Tech where i finished my BS in Aerospace Engineering. Don't go too much by the rankings. I think i might have misled you. My above comments were simply based on information I have gathered from fellow friends and faculty members. They may or may not correlate well with USN&WR rankings.

I see. Thanks for your input.

Even so, USN&WR rankings aren't the end-all, be-all. They're both excellent programs. I don't particularly want to retype it all, but I got a lot of positive feedback from a post in this thread, and I think it applies here... It's post 7.

UIUC and UMich are of similar enough caliber that honestly, there's pretty much no difference between the two of them, in terms of how they're seen by potential employers.

Thanks. This makes my college decisions alot easier.
