I heard it from college reviews… I’m planning on looking for some apartment today as I’m in the area… I don’t know… Do you know of Tower at Third (formerly: Presidential Towers/University Inn)… What do you think of it?

Thanks so so much

I won’t be back until school starts. I’m not familiar with housing during the summer at all, sorry I’m no help!

Hey can you tell me what the class size is like for freshmen/sophomore? I heard people saying it’s mostly 300-700, which quite intimidates me…>"<

Oh and are the classes mostly taught by TAs or professors/lecturers? (100 classes)

Is there grade inflation or any kind of academic cheating going on? Are the professors accessible (both in class and during office hours?)

Thanks a lot…^^

yes most class are around 300-700. Most TAs are there to reiterate the materials taught by the professor. TAs give out tips on what to study and stress the main points. Professors kind of cover materials more broadly.
I’m pretty sure there are students that cheat, but most people are honest. If you cheat you are kicked out of college so…I don’t think many students would do that. GPA inflation yes, most classes curve (one of my class curved by 7 %!). Ironically, I noticed the harder classes never curve O_O" (i.e. Accounting :X)
Professors are usually accessible during office hours but most students go to their TA. Students only go to Professors if their TA cannot help them or is hard to understand (aka foreign accent it has happened before). You can also talk to your professor before and after a lecture. The professors are more than happy to help you, because most students do not talk to them ever haha.

the large classes would mostly only be in the freshman year right? and is there GPA inflation across all departments at UIUC?

Not only freshman year. There are 300 people lectures for some Junior classes as well :/. Most large classes are the courses that you are required to take for your major.
I.e. if you are a Business major you have to take BADM 310 as Business core for Junior Year (this class offers about 600+ seats).
GPA is pretty much inflated across all departments at UIUC. I’m not too sure about Engineering because it seems like a lot of the tougher classes are the ones that does not curve.
Some classes barely curve because if one person gets 100% on a test then that means there won’t be any curves. If you compare UIUC to other colleges, obtaining a high GPA is a lot easier. The average GPA at UIUC is 3.14 I think…but that’s because there are a lot of slackers haha. Most departments’ dean’s list is around 3.65 (top 20%) which means over 6000 students have 3.65 or above <—(that IMO is A LOT of students and 3.65 is extremely high for college GPA)

What do you mean most classes are around 300-700? Exactly how many big classes you have attended? How many more do you think you will attend to finish your degree?

Oh and what is IMO?

300-700 means the number of students per lecture sorry I didn’t clarify that.
So far during my freshman year, I had 8 out of 10 of my classes that are large classes. I think at least 20 classes are large lectures before you finish your degree (or maybe less if you have a lot of credits). I don’t think large lectures are that bad though, you can always get help from TAs.
IMO = in my opinion for short.

He he I understand 300-700 means the number of students… I was just surprised that you said MOST classes are 300-700… I thought big classes are just a small portion. The rest is classes with under 30 people (according to the admission staff during my campus visit)

Well it’s too late to change my mind… I already accepted the admission offer…
