bump!!!
do they have buses from campus to off campus town?

Haha, keep your pants on guys.

The neighborhood is generally somewhat urban, which is surprising when you consider that Champaign/Urbana is in the middle of a corn field. Campus itself is pretty large, but you can walk to all your classes fairly easily if you so choose. The only problems are when you occasionally have to walk from one side to the other in 10 min between classes, which at times is not doable. For those times, and for the dead of winter, we have buses. The bus system is stellar, and is free on campus, and free for anyone with a student ID to anywhere else in the city. Those buses can get you basically anywhere you need to go in town.

As for the campus itself, right around campus you have numerous restaurants and bars, mostly (but not completely) situated near Green Street. There are about 5 blocks on Green Street with a myriad of food choices, and half a dozen bars, then another handful of restaurants and bars along the side streets in this area.

Moving a little farther from campus is downtown Champaign, which has several more restaurants an a lot more bars, generally over higher quality than what you find closer to campus. It is a place that you could walk on a warm day, but when it gets to be colder most people take a taxi or a bus, which is a 5 min ride or so. Farther away is the main area for most of the chain restaurants, which is just north of I-74. There is everything from Applebee's to Chevy's to Olive Garden, and it also has stores such as Best Buy, Barnes and Noble, Staples, Lowe's, and a shopping mall with all your basic shopping mall needs. That is a 10-15 min car ride from campus depending on traffic. There is also a movie theater in this area, as well as another just south of campus.

The neighborhood around campus is fairly safe, but every year you hear about one or two people getting mugged, so I would suggest just not walking around alone late at night. Though I have certainly done this my fair share of times and have turned out just fine, I have tempted fate every time.

Hope this helps. You can ask whatever else. I tend to check here fairly often so I can do my best to help.

thank you! your answer really helped. :D

Green Street is really all there is near campus, and it's nothing but bars and restaurants. As far as Theatre's go, I'm not even sure where the closest one is. It would surely require a bus or car to get to. You can walk from one side of campus to the other in about 15-20 minutes, so as already mentioned you'll be using the buses from time to time. Other than that, the neighborhood is pretty much standard residential zones that you'd see in any medium-sized midwestern town.

You will get to Champaign-Urbana and probably wonder why the **** you didn’t go to a city school.

Good thing the people after me are making very intelligent and helpful posts…

Sorry if we ruffled your feathers.
