I was accepted into the University of Michigan, New York University, Boston University, (University of Texas-Austin, Northeastern University/SMFA, School of the Art Institute of Chicago,) and wait-listed at Carnegie Mellon University, all for studio art. Money is not a factor. I'm just very conflicted as to where to choose. They all seem like they have very top-notch art programs. I'd just like to hear everyone's opinions. HELP!?!?!

I’m totally going through the same issue!
I hope someone replies…

haha yeah, i visited NYU and the art building was really dirty and cramped. I visited BU last saturday and i loved it, there was a lot of space and it was brand new. I’m visiting Michigan tomorrow, but so far I"m really loving BU.

Although I have not visited these schools, U of Mich has a very strong reputation in general (probably the most presitigious, except for Carnegie Mellon). Actually, the only school I have seen close up is SAIC, and it is current, cutting edge, contemporary and presitigious – but you have to ask yourself if you want to do art most of the time, with a little bit of liberal arts. OR do you want to study studio art and also explore other subjects? NYU has a strong reputation today, not so much 25 or so years ago. Consider where you want to be – big, metropolitan city (NY, Chicago) or smaller city (Pittsburgh, Ann Arbor, Boston). All great choices, but you have to think about your own preferences regarding environment. Good luck!

Nice, so how did you like UMich art+design building?

I’m just trying to decide between NYU and UMich now, and it is so hard to pick one over the other! I loved U Michigan’s campus and just the whole atmosphere, it reminded me a lot of Boston-where I live right now. But to attend NYU studio art program, I know I would have access to so many resources and connections compared to being in Ann Arbor.

Have you made your decision yet?

i’ve decided on BU! i was extremely disappointed with Michigan’s art program. it was huge, about 140, and they except 60%, so i didn’t feel very special there. i’d find it would be very difficult to be an artist in a town where there are only 2 museums and it felt very isolated from the rest of the world. NYU had a great program, but it was very cramped and they kept trying to sell the name NYU, i didn’t really seem wanted there. however, nyc is an amazing city, with so many opportunities for artists, so i think you’d definitely love it there. however, it’s just not for me, i think it’s important to get away for college, BU seemed to offer the campus and community i was looking for in an art program, as well as great resources in Boston and connections, with an intensive curriculum and program. good luck with you decision! =]
