UM-TC vs. UW-Mad Business

So I have not been accepted to either yet, but for now let's assume I get accepted to both considering the following: ACT Composite 30, 3.9 GPA, no class rank, currently full-time PSEO at UM-TC. I am interested in Finances and Economics. I live about 30 minutes from UM-TC and about 5 hours from UW-M. I guess from all the forum reading I've done, it seems as though the common response is that Madison has more national reputation and more research. However, both of these points are non-factors to me. I want to be something along the lines of a Fund-Manager, so research really isn't that important to me I guess. Also, I plan to get a job in the Twin Cities, Madison/Milwaukee, or Chicago, so national reputation isn't as big of a deal as regional reputation. I was talking about it with my mother who is a planning supervisor and she said she would hire someone from UM-TC CSM over someone from UW-M because she doesn't know much about their business school (which is why I bring up regional reputation over national reputation.)

I've attended about a month at UM-TC as a PSEO student so I don't get the full environment of college, but I guess I do see a lacking Gopher spirit. I'm told that Badger pride is unreal come gameday. I was never much of a partier in high school, so would Madison get old? I love the idea of college experience, but the education and where I'll end up is more important to me than the atmosphere of the school. I understand rankings and everything, but I feel that UM-TC gets worse overall rankings because their College of Liberal Arts is lacking.

Thanks for the help!

Well…you already know what the U of M is like. So visit Madison and see what you think. If you want to get a job in the Midwest, either business school would be great (although UW would be better if you want to work in Chicago). Given the similarities between the quality of education at these schools, it should boil down to these factors:

-Which is cheaper?
-Do you want to live close or “far” away from your family?
-Which school atmosphere would you feel most comfortable in? Big city or college town?

We can’t really answer these questions for you, so pick whichever one feels best. Because your job prospects will likely be pretty similar (UW having an advantage in Chicago, UMN having the advantage in the Twin Cities). Good luck! Go Gophers!

UW produces lots of fund managers. Last time I saw numbers it was in the middle of the Top 5 for producing mutual fund managers and easily tops in the Midwest. It has had a real student run fund for 40 years.

Minnesota is a large urban university. Wisonsin is a large sub-urban/rural university. Other than that, these schools are relatively similar, both in student body and in academics. You should just visit the two schools and see where you think you fit best.
