My son got admit in UMass Amherst , Computer Systems Engg with 12K $ scholarship per year. He got admit in Virginia Tech and University of Washington Seattle, Computer Science. But he did not get any scholarship
It looks like University of Washington Seattle, is very expensive, for an international student when compared to other colleges. Can anyone throw light on the approximate cost of attendance and whether it is worth spending so much on UW Seattle (of the 3 it is a bit ahead in the rankings)
If it is direct admit in UW-CS, go for it.
If admitted, you should know the COA for each school.
Among your three choices, University of Washington CS as a direct admit is the best.
UW Seattle (Ranked in top 10 for CS) is better as a plain Computer Science school. Also, it has the best location - with Amazon and Microsoft right in the neighborhood. Moreover, Silicon Valley is a 2-hour flight away.
UMass Amherst (Top 20 for CS) is also really good for CS. But don’t consider it unless you are interested in Artificial Intelligence - if you are, then definitely go for UMass. It is ranked in the top 10 for AI and has a really good AI department.
Virginia Tech (top 40) is good, but the others are way better.

As a undergrad how can I take benifit of Umass Ai if I am going for a BS Degree Computer Science ? @quintessential7 I am very intrested in AI .
@vijayavadrevu did you apply EA for Umass?
@gingo1234 someone else asked if you applied EA, why…is it if you apply early action do you get better aid? Sorry I just did not know. Thanks
@MomNama Yes, trying to figure out if EA provides better aid / choice of major…
@gingo1234 that is what admissions told me at Lowell.
@Indiandude0 There are quite a few AI-based labs at UMass Amherst. Once you go there for CS, just contact the faculty and state that you are interested in doing AI research.
@Indiandude0 As far as I know, there are no courses for undergrads in AI/ML for which UMass is known for.
@gingo1234 yes, there is definitely a relation b/w applying EA and getting your choice of major/scholarship. I have known people with worse stats than mine getting into CS directly because they applied EA, but still getting an equal scholarship. So, yeah, it is kind of like first come first serve.
