I have narrowed my college decision to UMD College Park, SUNY Binghamton, or RPI, but I am having trouble choosing between the 3. I am going to be majoring in computer engineering and I am a NYS resident. Money is a very important factor but I’d rather get the best education and spend a little bit more, however what is too much?. For me to go to UMD or RPI it would cost about $32,000/year and $16,000/year to go to Binghamton. I’ve visited all 3 and I loved UMD, liked Binghamton, and liked RPI. UMD is by far my favorite, but is it worth it being so much more money? I know I will probably have more job opportunities after college if I attend UMD rather than Binghamton. Which of the 3 is ranked the highest for undergrad engineering? what do you think my best bet would be?
How much of the cost would have to be debt?
Yes, if you are an engineer you will get a better job from a better program. It is worth it. You will be able to afford to pay the loans back quickly and you will likely benefit from the better school for the rest of your life…
@ucbalumnus a good amount of it would end up being debt.
Can you indicate how much debt you’d take on for each university?
@MYOS1634 these are very rough estimates and worse case scenario as in I get no extra scholarships and the same financial aid every year but Binghamton: $93,000 UMD:$158,000 RPI: $146,000
Contact each college’s financial aid office asap ie., tomorrow morning, after checking your portal to see if your offer has not been posted.
You, yourself, can" only" take $27k over 4years. Anything else would be taken on by your parents. What are they saying?
As of now, in that scenario, none of the options are affordable.
