So may be it is highly selective !
There are many students in the Honors College and the Scholars Program who do NOT get any scholarships.
Great way to kick off Presidentās Day weekend with a Presidentās Scholarship.
D was selected for Scholars. In state.
I have an in-state freshman at UMD, and their friend group consists of several high-stats kids. All had 4.0s, 1500+ SAT scores. Last year, all were offered a spot in Honors College. One was a BK finalist, one got $4500/year for 2 years, and the others got no scholarship whatsoever. This year I have another student with similar high-stats friend group. Out of 8 kids, only one was offered a spot in Honors College, a few (not all of the others) got Scholars, and one kid in the group was rejected. That was shocking (again, instate, high stats). I havenāt yet asked who was offered what merit yet, but I will be very curious to find out. Our public high school tells the kids every year that UMD should not be considered a safety school, but this year more than previous years that feels true. Clearly this was a talented class and admission was very selective. I donāt think anyone should feel shocked or confused by no scholarship offers. UMD has never been overly generous, and even in-state kids with exceptional stats donāt get merit aid.
Same for my Son- Honors college, School of Engineering
DS got the Presidentās scholarship but was not accepted to honors college.
What is the major?
Same here. Maximum Presidential scholarship but no Honors and no direct admit to CS major. Carillon. OOS. High stats.
Chem engineering
Same. No honors or scholars but Presidentās Scholarship. I was ok when the no honors or scholars came out as I totally understand itās a crazy year and very competitive to get into those programs (and honestly my kid is a good kid but doesnāt exactly have the community building extra curriculares it seems match well with scholars). But receiving the Presidentās scholarship just made us a little more confused about no honors.
Thanks for all the responses _ it does seem like most who got these scholarships are in honors or scholars, but I also I see we are not alone. Good luck everyone.
Hi All, Just got back and D22 checked her portal. Only got the $5,500 Stafford Loan, and honestly, I was expecting this having been on the thread. Itās totally ok though. She is a finalist at Pitt for the Stamps Scholarship and will be heading there this fall!! All the best to the students and your kids. UMD is a wonderful school, and I wish you all the best!
We did not fill in FAfsa , we are in stateā¦ can that be reason not to get scholarship?
Congratulations to your D on her Stamps finalist status at Pitt! Wishing her continued success and happy years ahead.
Thank you so much. Same to you and your kiddo!
Presidentās Scholarship for S22 too, but he will most likely follow money to other colleges.
we didnāt file FAFSA either but we got the Presidentās scholarship.
same here, my son was not accepted to the honors college but received the scholarship. Itās my wild guess that they want to distribute honors/scholarships among high stat kids to entice them to enroll.
Continuing the discussion from UMD Early Action for Fall 2022 Admission:
DD OOS 4.0 UW 34 ACT Solid ECs and Essay. Admitted EAā¦ No Honors or Premier Scholar invite. Just received Presidential Merit Total $20,000 or $5,000 per year. Already accepted to Privates with much higher merit resulting in lower out of pocket . Somewhat disappointedā¦
Iāve been on this Forum since 2013.
I have seen NO relationship getting into Honors/Scholars and getting a Presidents/Deans Scholarship. None ate all.
Iāve look at the UMD CDS. In there they give date for NEED based and NONE-NEED based scholarships and financial aid.
The words āPresidentās Scholarshipā and āDeanās Scholarshipā do not appear at all. Nor do the words āBanneker Keyā
My conclusion is that STATS, Honors, and Scholars are Not necessarily the major factors in Scholarship awards.
But, everyone is free to make their own conclusions.
Congratulations to all who got scholarships, and best wishes to all who were admitted to UMD
