Im wondering how UMDs electrical engineering program compares to that of other colleges. I know that it has a good engineering program overall but only interested in the electrical engineering program. How would it compare to a top school like CMU, which has, to the best of my knowledge, the best electrical engineering program in the country? How woud it compare to other engineering schools like Georgia Tech and RPI?

I think all of the schools you listed will prepare you well and give you a great education. What is the “best” comes down to “fit” for you. Have you visited all of the schools?

If it helps, all three were considered by my aspiring engineer…

CMU was a top choice before a visit but things changed after a visit - not for any reason you may be thinking… Looking at specific curriculum plans, decided it was a better fit for a graduate degree than undergrad (knows Masters is personal minimum degree desired, and would also rather go to two different schools than stay at one to get a broader education and change up research/internship opportunities)…

Did not visit RPI - guidance counselor begged (really tried on multiple occasions) to apply there, but no interest due to location - too industrial - and male/female ratio was really not good. It’s bad enough you can’t escape that ratio in engineering classes, but if you choose a university that has a wider variety of majors, you’ll get to take a break socially and meet people who have different interests outside of class.

Georgia Tech - combination of both reasons - decided it was better for grad school and didn’t like male/female ratio, at least for undergrad experience.

What was so attractive about Maryland? A LOT! Here are two threads I contributed some reasons why I think Maryland is such a great choice…hope this helps.
