I have gotten into both. Computer Science at UMD and Computer Science and Engineering in the college of engineering at OSU. Both are same price after scholarships. Which one is more worth it? Which one will have better job prospects regarding prestige?
I think they’re probably comparable.
I’d go with UMD Honors.
UMD has a good CS program. I have a friend who goes there and loves it, but what you choose probably stems down to personal preference. Have you visited either yet?
I think UMD probably has an edge in CS. As for school spirit, OSU wins here. As far as prestige, it’s probably a wash. Prestige of alma mater is not a huge consideration to firms hiring CS grads unless it’s into Wall Street. More important is that both schools will attract many large firms to campus with CS hiring needs. You cannot go wrong.
@TheDidactic only Umd
Visit OSU and see how you like the campus and the overall feel.
Bump? Im in the engineering college at OSU btw, which might make it more reputable? idk
I’m from Ohio and am a huge love OSU, so this may be a little biased… OSU has a huge college so if you’re looking for a big campus win lots of kids and school spirit, then OSU is for you. I would visit just incase. OSU is great in the sciences and ranked #34th in the country also. However, UMD has a great program as well that’s ranked #15th.
“OSU is great in the sciences and ranked #34th in the country also.”
I assume you mean for CS?
@gschwartz @rjkofnovi So im in engineering at OSU. Wouldn’t that be a better major? Since then I have both science and engineering? And how do the internship opportunities differ at each?
Actually that is a very good point, and looking at their curriculum it is clear that OSU requires two “electrical and computer engineering” courses. I presume that this is basically computer hardware theory. UMD might offer that, but it is not required. OSU also requires one Physics course plus an additional science elective, while UMD does not.

I sum, it looks like UMD is mostly oriented toward software, while OSU adds a measure of hardware engineering too, plus a couple of science courses. Seems like that would be valuable. In fact, my uncle worked many years in Silicon Valley and advised students to gain an understanding of both software and computer hardware.
On the other hand, UMD is generally more prestigious (some people think OSU is just a football school) and has much better winter weather. Basically, this is a “win-win” decision. You can’t go wrong.
So the fact you will attend engineering at OSU makes it more reputable? That’s the way your post reads. No. Both schools are fine and will give you opportunities. I understand you are trying to make a decision. Have you visited both?
@ErinsDad Just UMD, i liked it but i have yet to visit OSU. I heard its huge though.
We have been to both schools as my son got into both. I would say you need to visit them. UMD and Ohio State are two very different campuses. Both are excellent schools but after visiting my son really loved Ohio State, loved the tour and the people and campus. When we toured UMD he didn’t get the same vibe from the tour and the counselors talking. With that said it is a personal preference. Good luck
@college67 thanks!
@NROTCgrad yea true, but i realized the prestige factor doesn’t matter when theres a small difference between 2 colleges. Also, I can do masters in engineering at OSU while at UMD this might be a little harder. Plus, maybe grad school can be like top 10. Anyways thanks for input.
