Well I was admitted to these two schools and rejected by all my other choices :-( (except waitlisted at WashU) so now I have to make a decision about which I want to attend. I'm most likely going to study molecular bio/neurosci...maybe double major or a minor in business...any suggestions on where i should go??

thanks all

UCLA doesn't even have business right?

UCLA is a better school but you are instate at UMD and honor students usually get scholarships. Did you get a scholarship? What is the price difference?

I don't think you can "minor" in business at UMD though. you'll need it as a major but that just means you'll duel major... I think.

yea haha I honestly forgot that ucla didnt have business, but honestly thats not the most important thing to me...

yes I did get a scholarship to umd and since its instate the price difference is significant, though money is not a real issue...

i guess im just asking if there is any real difference in education/opportunities between the two (neglecting the fact that you get out what you put in :-))

btw im entering college wanting to graduate and enter med school...not sure which, if either, would offer better chances for that...

thanks again

I think everyone would agree UCLA is a great school. It is in a great place and it must be fun. I don't think anyone would put UMD above UCLA. If money is ABSOLUTELY no problem and you don't mind going 5000 miles away from home I don't see why you would go to UMD. However if you weigh everything I don't see that UCLA will help for a medical career. From what I have learned on this site pre-med only matters on grades. Just grades. It doesn't really matter where you go, just that you get straight A's. All things considered I have friends in similar situations as you. THey got into great schools and want a medical career. UNC, NYU, UChicago, Umich, Uwisc, amoung others and they all are leaning toward UMD because of price and proximity. I know very little about medical careers but I don't think it matters where you go for pre-med. There have been many threads dealing with this in the pre-med board. You might want to check them out to be for sure because I am going to major in business and haven't really looked into medical stuff that much.

jfanny-- i know that the UMD honors program has a 92% acceptance rate into med school (much much higher than the national average which i believe is around 50%?). again, this is just the honors program average but i think it definitely speaks highly of the school as a whole.

premed is tough here. i have a few molecular bio/neurophys major friends and they put in a LOT of time both in and out of class!

good luck with your decision.

wow im impressed with that figure actually, although im not too familiar with such numbers....how does 92% acceptance stack up compared to other universities?

I think one of my major concerns is infact the amount of competition and the amount of support I will be getting (in the form of advisiors and peers). Anyone want to assess the competition level at UMD compared to other schools (in reference to the pre-med science courses)

I believe that the honors program has its own advisors...how helpful are they and is there any peer support?

thanks all

whoa. that is so weird.
i was umd honors
ucla
ANDDD waitlisted at washu.
thats so crazy.
but im journalism.
and my parents have pulled out the financial aid card but unless you are doing business: go to ucla.
hope to see you there :)

haha that is weird....yea im so back and forth everyday :-/

well we'll see :-)...good luck with everything

jfanny-- the national average for med school acceptance is ~ 50%.
