Which is the best choice for overall college experience? Virginia tech jmu or umd college park

Tech. Good academics, lots of school pride, a good football team, and an awesome alumni network.

Post on the VT board if you want more information about us. I went to Virginia Tech and loved it so I’ll be biased, but there isn’t one answer to this question.

What major are you looking at doing, what’s important to you, what are your preferences, etc.

I’ll say this about JMU; you can go to VT and drive over to JMU to party. You can’t go to JMU and take classes at VT. Past that your decision is whether you’d like to be made fun of for your mascot being a turkey or turtle.

OP, are you a senior? Have you already applied to UMd? Their deadline was Nov. 1st.

Yea I applied already… I was thinking possibly pre vet

Yeah, you can completely drop JMU off of your list if you get in all three then. VT is light years ahead of JMU in pre vet (particularly small animal car.) I don’t know about UMD.

Yea I’ve been leaning towards vt recently just because I like pretty much everything about it I just wanted some more opinions… Thanks for all the answers btw

And chuy did you ever have a problem with the guy/girl ratio? Because I’ve heard from a few people that there are a lot more guys than girls

No, I never had a problem with the ratio. A good percentage of the guys at VT aren’t exactly in the dating pool for one reason or another.

I’m at UMD and I absolutely love it. Nice campus, Washington DC is a metro ride away (really convenient), good school spirit.

My sister goes to Tech and not sure why anyone at JMU would want to drive two hours to have introductory Econ with 500 students in the same class…just saying…

I’d say of the three, in terms of relative prestige, all are very close though UMD is harder to get into than VT/JMU on average.

For Business
- Maryland
- James Madison
- Virginia Tech Tech

For Engineering:
- Virginia Tech
- Maryland

For Liberal Arts:
- JMU
- Maryland
- VT

VT and Maryland are big state schools while JMU is sort of medium sized. VT way far away from DC Metro but has a great campus (my sister goes there)

Thanks for all the answers

We have toured VT and UMD. It depends where you live. We are 5.5 hours away from Tech, so for an emergency dose of home for a bad week, roommate problem is out, I don’t know many that can do a straight 11 hours just to turn around again 2 days later.
That being said We found the Blacksburg area beautiful and clean. The dorm rooms were smaller than MD, they spent alot of time on the tour discussing the award winning food. Also take time to research the colleges from peopl like US news etc. MD is rated higher in vet and engineering and my son’s major Math. Our biggest turn off was when the assistant dean doing a discussion on the college of science, which houses Math, he said no less than 3 times I don’t like Math. So my son’s take away was that math was low on the University’s priority.
UMD is also a nice campus and is very strong for a math major (#20 in the nation) My son’s reasons for making it his #1, high ranking in my major, sports to attend and participate in, numerous clubs, activities on campus, close enough to come home if needed or desired but far enough away to be away at school. He has very high stats so after speaking to a former admissions person, I’m confident he’ll be accepted. He also applied to UDE and UMBC (Also very nice campuses, accepted to UMBC)

I have the same problem with vt only that I’m more like eight hours away…
