I need all the advice I can get....please help.

I am a senior at a public high school in Maryland.

I live in Maryland, and I applied to the University of Maryland School of Business. I have been accepted to UMD for Fall 2010, but not the business school, I have been placed into the school of letters and sciences. On the other hand, I have been accepted to Penn State University Park School of Engineering for the Fall 2010. I know for sure that I either want to major in a field of business or engineering, but I am not sure which one I prefer yet. I realize that both business and engineering are LEP programs at UMD. I like UMD more than Penn State, but I am not sure what to do anymore. Do you believe it is worth the chance of going to UMD and hoping to be accepted to the business or engineering school after two years? Or do you think I would be better off just going to Penn State?

During one of the online chats that I participated in, some kid said they wanted to change their major into one of the LEPs. It was mentioned that you can email um-admit@umd.edu and asked to be reviewed for a certain program…why don’t you email them, and ask to be reviewed for Engineering? Just explain that you changed your mind or something. Then, if you get in, and decide to ultimately attend UMD over Penn state, you have a backup plan if you can’t transfer into business. I know you’re in a bind but I hope this helps somehow!!

^^^ is good advice. IMHO you should go to the school you prefer. Kids are changing majors all the time. Our s just dropped out of the Smith school yesterday. He found the curriculum boring and many of the kids uninteresting. Not trying to dis the school in any way, but that turned out to be true for him. He still loves MD and has a 3.95 gpa, so he’s doing well just discovered he’s not the business type. What’s turning him on is economics, conflict resolution, and international policy.

Well, this is a tough one, since it can require quite high grades to get into business and engineering - they are MD’s toughest LEPs in terms of admission standards. You also may need to take some prerequisite courses, so make sure to get in contact with advising at both the business school and at the engineering school and ask what you need to do to be considered for admission.

Is cost an issue? Since you are in-state at MD it seems it might be significantly cheaper. Cheaper for a school you like more is almost always better.

One thing to keep in mind is you have to go into MD with no regrets. If you are start thinking, oh, if only I had gone to Penn State…your grades and attitude will start to go down the tube. Your admission to the LEP programs, your success in life, etc. are all in your hands wherever you go. If you work hard at MD and buckle down you can get good grades and be admitted to the program of your choice. Good luck.
