UMD - Party School

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought that UMD has appeared in the top 20 before....
yay, not there for this year!

Penn State named 2010 Top Party School

Haha, not to say that incoming freshmen won't have their choice of opportunities to party. I'm just glad to see it not on this list!

I’m happy to know that UMD wasn’t included, too!

I’m surprised.

We’re totally a party school…

Haha.

Maybe there are worse, though :). Now that I think about it there are a LOT of nerdy people at MD hunched over engineering or biology textbooks in the dorm common rooms who’ve probably never had a sip of alcohol in their life :P.

I know some very nerdy people who do a lot of hunching over physics and math and astronomy books…I’m afraid the “never had a sip” doesn’t hold true, though!!!

Maybe when next year’s crop of potential Terp moms and dads come here to CC, there won’t be so many “Is there ever any studying done?” questions!!!

haha…this thread will reassure the parents and probably freak out the incoming new Terp students!!! (not to worry, guys, there’s ALWAYS going to be a place for you to go to get drunk, if that’s your thing!)

PR also ranks us as the school with the best athletic facilities (ERC woot woot), #2 on the “students who study the least” list, having the 4th best college newspaper, and #5 on the pack the stadiums list.

I think our party rank dropped because one of the criteria was popularity of greek life, which at Maryland is only 12-15% of the population. Now if the criteria is, are there at least some people at the bars or throwing a party at any given night of the week…then we’re definitely in the top 20.

If you’re looking to party at Maryland, you’ll be disappointed. Frat parties at UMD suck. Last semester I went to like 5 before saying screw it because 3 of them ran out of alcohol. House parties are hit or miss, the ones on Knox are usually pretty good. Almost everyone goes to the bars for an overpriced cover, ****ty DJs, and watered down drinks.

And the pack the stadiums is the biggest load of crap I’ve ever read. I love the school, but there’s no way that scan and leavers and people who leave after halftime deserve to be number 5. Practically all of the SEC and Big Ten should be ahead of us, and in our own conference there is Clemson, VT, and FSU and many more.

^Frat parties are hit or miss, too.

I’ve actually only been to one where the drinks ran out…and I did show up at 2 am…but I promptly left and went to another :).

And then some are like awesome raging dance parties, and others are just like 15 bafoons playing beer pong and trying to hook up with 2 or 3 slutty girls.

As much as I hate frats out of principle (don’t shoot me) and as much as I think frat parties can get stupid and tiresome, I’m gonna admit that some boys - even if they’re in a frat - do know how to throw a good party :).

Parties in general are always a hit or miss; you have to check a few out in a night, have some connections who you know are always throwing sick parties, or throw them yourself ;). I totally don’t think you’ll be disappointed at MD. But you have to know that finding a good party when every other house is throwing one on any given Fri/Sat. night is like a needle in the haystack. I mean a lot could go wrong. There’s a lot of wannabes :P. Plus eventually you’ll grow out of going to random houses and find it’s nicer to chill at a friend’s place.

But I agree on the bar scene. I totally DO NOT get the appeal of it at all, I mean, too loud to talk (and nowhere to go, unlike at a house party), drinks are not free (?!) or extremely reduced in price…it’s like we’re all paying to…sit…around? So yeah, bars, no. Although Santa Fe can sometimes be cool 'cause of the bands. The Pie Tasters came once. How awesome is that.

I went to Maryland for one semester and I thought for Fall 2007 Maryland was a huge party school. Weekends begin on Thursdays and don’t end till Sunday afternoon when I was there and you have few people who go out throughout the weekdays. Almost every party, whether it was the University View, Frat Row/ the roads where the Greek houses are, or Knox Box, it definitely was a good time and yeah there are always provocative girls that you could score with, but that’s not my style, I’ve turned down quite a few of fast MD girls. The parties I attended were all good times, lots of beer (kegs and kegs and kegs) and a lot of bumping and grinding in the basement with loud music, on the main floor there were more people socializing, hooking up, dancing, and of course you had people playing alcoholic games such as Beirut (BEERPONG for you amateurs), Flip-Cup, Shot-gun amongst other fun and silly games.

However, I heard that in Spring 2008 when “Thirsty Turtle” opened than the house party/ greek party scene died down as “Turtle” was the place to be. I went to visit my friends in October and it was true, the line was out the door, backed up on the sidewalk.

All in all, Maryland is a fun school, regardless if it’s nationally ranked.

interesting, UMD is #11 on playboy’s list of party schools for 2009.

[Top Party Schools 2009 The Works](http://www.playboy.com/articles/top-party-schools-2009-the-works/index.html)

I hope it’s ok to post the link lol there’s no nudity in it. Then again, the Princeton Review posted the list the op is referring to, so they may or may not be the better choice.

what you gota do is hit up the clubbin spots in DC much rather be at one of those i was down there for orientation and my cousin took me to 1 of them and wow it was LIVE .

No need for DC, there’s plenty of fun in CP. Pre-gaming in dorms then head out to either Knox Box or one of the bars (Santa Fe, Cornerstone) or club/bar like Thirsty Turtle. And then after you had enough of town, you can come back at like 2AM and “play” on the Mall or in the huge fountain.

^Yeah interestingly enough, the DC party scene gets older much faster than the CP one, despite the fact that there’s like, 4 bars in CP and 4 zillion in DC.

It gets really old paying $20 cover to dance.

Or for cab rides home on Thurs night.

I think DC is cool to mix it up with, but not so much for the club scene. I’d rather spend my time in DC at a museum, or exploring, or at an improv or art show, than at one of the overpriced bars/clubs there. And then come back to CP to drink and relax and be craaaazy with friends at a nice house party.

It’s definitely one of the greatest things about MD, that it’s so close to DC that is, but not for the partying aspect. I mean, if CP isn’t enough for you when it comes to paries then I think you are focusing too much on parties to begin with :P
