UMD vs U of who??

goooooood :D

I don't want to open another thread so I'll just post up a random question here. I hope someone who knows the answer looks at it.

Are there any gyms or places to work out on campus? I am sure there are but is there a membership or is it free? Crowded?
thanks

lol there actually is like some kind of a membership..there def are gyms and stuff, and like, i think u have to pay? i know there are classes...idk, it's on the maryland website..

YES!! great gyms. and free. if you want to take aerobics/weight classes, or personal training, or stuff like that, then you pay. (it's $3 for 3, $10 for $10, or $25 for unlimited semester.) but to use the gym is FREE for students.

the main gym on campus is the CRC (campus recreation center), right between the ellicott community and the cambridge community. it's absolutely gorgeous and huge. a few pools, a 2-story weight room, free weights, lots of machines (treadmills, ellipticals, etc.), basketball courts, an indoor track, racquetball courts, a snack bar, and a pro shop....

then across route 1 from campus, next to fraternity row, is ritchie coliseum. it has a basketball court, an aerobics room, a weight room, and a room with machines. it's pretty small, but usually only used by people living in the fraternity/sorority houses or the leonardtown apartments.

the armory also has basketball courts, and apparently the health & human performance building has some gym-related stuff, but i'm not sure what.

but yessss the gym is FREE!

Thanks!
that is awesome that is is free. it being right in the middle of ellicot and cambridge makes it like a gym across the street. Expecially the sporting events being free. Penn State charges kids $25 to go to a football game. That is horrible. Might as well add $150 to the tuition because I will go to all of them if I go. They charge for mens and women's basketball too(and they suck). It is good that I could get all my entertainment free through parties and sporting events at UMD. Lately I have been wanting to be there and leave right now.

lidz, I have a question since I get the (hopefully correct) impression that youre in Scholars. The Scholars dorms seem to be way out in the middle of nowhere (for classes, for frat row if you decide to go to parties, etc) is that a correct impression? Or did it just seem that way to me since it was my first visit.

The one thing about the scholar dorms I noticed was that it seemed to be right in the middle of comcast center and the football stadium.

The area near the freshmen dorms looks ugly. all the classes are all the way over at the other side.

eckie -- nope, i'm not in scholars. but the dorms are closer to everything than any dorm in the other two north campus communities, with the exception of the football stadium and CSPAC. it's about a 10-15 minute walk to fraternity row, and about 10-12 to the mall. from the denton community, for example, fraternity row is about 25 minutes and the mall is about 10-15. also, the cambridge community (scholars dorms) is right by the physics/math/engineering and bio/psych/plant sciences buildings.
keep in mind if you're going to a party, it will be at night and the shuttle buses will be running! :)

Ahhhhh I can't wait. I wanna go to college right now!!!

I set up my facebook last night haha :D

TerpHopeful612 - Great minds must think alike! I had always discouraged my dau from facebook and myspace, but when we got her email account when I paid her deposit - thats one of the first things she did - it was like the day after she turned 18. Bet you 2 are the only ones there from class of 2010! GGTMom

haa, i am waiting till i turn in my acceptance.

okay so i narrowed it down between Lehigh and Maryland. I have ABSOLUTELY how to decide between these two. I mean, I love the whole atmosphere at Maryland and feel that there will be many more opportunities there, but Lehigh's Engineering program (which I will be studying) is more prestigous. Another big difference, besides the size, is the tuitition. Maryland is over $10,000 less expensive than Lehigh. Anyone have any opinions?

PS. Still waiting for Brown and Tufts decisions, but I highly doubt I'll get into either.

ABSOLUTELY no idea how

Lehigh's engineering program is listed at 41 in U.S news. Maryland's rank is 22 tied with UCLA, UCSD, Duke, UWashington.

I don't get engineering rankings, there are two in U.S. new's book. The one with Maryland and Lehigh on the same list has maryland above it by a good amount. Lehigh is ranked at 32 overall but a 3.2 peer assessment rating. Other schools with a 3.2 include U delaware and Baylor. Maryland is ranked lower at 55 but has a 3.7 rating. UMD is instate. UMD is cheaper.

I would pick UMD. Where did you find that the engineering at lehigh was better? I could be wrong.

UMD vs. Stanford = UMD, because I can't afford Stanford, and I've got a 67% chance at a full ride at Maryland, 100% chance that it's going to be very cheap (have whatever the next prestigious scholarship is to Banneker/Key)

UMD vs. USC = UMD, same deal.
UMD vs. Pittsburgh = UMD, because I visited Pitt was wasn't impressed
UMD vs. Santa Clara = depends on the $$. If the money's comparable, SCU wins because it's smaller and in California.

I got waitlisted at Wake Forest :(

so it's looking like UMD vs. UPenn and chances arent looking so hot for me at Penn right now...

mike-- lehigh is in the middle of absolutely nowhere. no fun at all. come to UMD. :)

I just confirmed my enrollment for UMD! I visited it and stayed overnight and absolutely loved it. I'm a part of the Philip Merrill College of Journalism. I'm super excited but nervous about meeting new people...Anyone else going to Merrill?

congrats tea, the journalism school is great.

rejected at penn. looks like I'll be going to UMD next year, whether I had wanted to or not.
