Hello, everyone. I got accepted into UMD’s honors college for computer science, UMich LSA, and UCLA for Applied Math. Right now, I’m planning to go to UMD because I’m already in the honors college and the cybersecurity learning community, and I’m getting money ($12k for the first two years and $2k for the last two). However, I also want to consider internship/job opportunities in the tech areas. Which school do you think would give me the best value? Thanks in advance
For best value, no doubt UMD. You are getting paid to attend, and I’m sure you’ll get preference for all the research/internship positions.
Are you in-state for any of these universities?
I mean, assuming that you are not a state resident in any of these places, the best value would seem to be Maryland, since you are getting some money there. The honors college is excellent, it’s a great university, and students from UMD often go into technology (their CS department is excellent). The DC/Baltimore area does have some tech opportunities for internships, and you can always do summer internships elsewhere as well. I think you’d be well-positioned to get those.
If you’re a resident of Michigan or California that maybe changes the equation a little.
I second juillet. UMD has a top CS department. Unless you are a resident of CA or MI, UMD is the way to go here.
Did you check the NPCs or receive the FA packages from the other 2 schools?
OP is out-of-state for UCLA as posted in another thread.
University of Maryland Honors for computer science is the best option based on the scant information shared above.
I’m OOS for all three
But even OOS students pay significantly less at UMD than at Michigan or UCLA, and the $30k scholarship over 4 years only makes it harder to justify. Obviously, if your parents can easily afford the cost difference (roughly $90k over 40 years), then I would recommend going with fit.
I plan on going to grad school, anyway, and I have a sibling who’s a dependent in college, which is why UMD attracts me. I do like UMich and UCLA more, though. However, I’m touring UMD soon, so I’ll see how I like it.
