I’m really worried about getting into UMD, which is my reach school and my #1 school.
my weighted cumulative gpa is a 4.16 and unweighted a 3.48. My SAT superscore is a 1230.
i have taken several rigorous AP/honors courses and done well (As and Bs) in all of them…except math. I have gotten 3 Cs in math which will show on my transcript and am super scared that those are gonna hurt me a lot in terms of getting in. i had a lot of personal things going on and it really screwed me over in math…but idk if my other grades, which are not bad, will even make up for that.
do u think i even have a chance? i think my essay/application was pretty good and im involved in a lot of extra curriculars.i have leadership roles and internships/work experience all on my resume, however, i am especially worried since umd seems random in their selection sometimes and will deny someone with a relatively good gpa and sat but admit someone with stats like mine. please lmk what u think because i am super stressed about this!!
Ok, relax. Your GPA is pretty good (especially weighted) and so are your SAT scores. The Cs in Math are all relative- what program are you applying to? College recruiters understand that not everyone has a math brain. Also, they love to see the balance of extracurriculars, so the fact that you have several is good. Take some deep breaths. Also, what other schools did you apply/expect to get in to?
I️ applied as a computer science major. The only other 2 schools applied to are umbc and Towson and Igot deferred from Umbc yesterday which reallyyy sucks but hopefully I’ll get in once they revisit my app for regular decision. My friend told me they defer a lot of people and give the top of the top a chance first but once they choose another school, they let in people with my scores.

your friend is right and the only thing you can do is relax and wait. try and build on your programming skills in the meantime because no matter where you go, computer science is tough.
@ansctransfer yeah i know! i need to work on that haha but thanks so much hopefully it’ll all work out
@blue2000 This must be an especially tough year for UMBC because i’m shocked at how many students with good stats have been deferred.
UMD will be tough with C’s in math - UMD is tough with B’s in math, honestly! They seem to focus so much on test scores, class rank, and GPA. Towson will be a good safety for you, and I bet UMBC will come through with an acceptance.
I’d encourage you to write your admissions counselor at UMBC a follow up letter reiterating your interest. Good luck to you!
@blue2000 A few years ago our DS16 submitted EA applications to UMBC, along with Towson and Salisbury for a CS degree. He was deferred by UMBC although accepted to Towson and Salisbury right away. A few months later he was accepted at UMBC, so I think there’s definitely still a chance you’ll get in. He submitted mid-year grades since they were strong, and thinks that may have helped with the decision. Good luck!
@STF4717 i was shocked too! i almost didn’t apply to towson because i thought since my scores and gpa were above umbc’s average, it would be a good safe school. but, i will take writing a letter into consideration as i hadn’t thought of that, thank you!
@lifegarding that’s reassuring thanks, and hopefully they will accept me!!
Sat- 1390 (720 eng, 690 math)
GPA- 3.85 W
APs- Bio (3), Psych (4), US History (4), Language (4), Government (4)
ECs- football, hockey, spring track for 3 years
Appalachian Service Project 2 years
DECA 2 years
What are my chances of getting into UMD as a biology major? Honesty is appreciated
@mamd1822 Assuming you’re in state and not applying to the Engineering or Business schools, you’re right at the cutoff. Your GPA is a bit low, but your SAT is higher than the average, so it’ll probably come down to other factors. Chances are, if your essays and letters of recommendation were good, you’re probably in - and even if they weren’t it’s still a coin flip.
My stats
3.5 GPA
1070 SAT
2 AP classes (all A’s)
Takes courses at a local university 3.9 GPA
15 extracurricular activities
5 community service organization.
My grades aren’t perfect. I applied for the CS program at UMD it’s my top choice. What are my chances of getting in?
I got into Towson, UMBC and Loyola
