UMDNJ-NJMS vs. GW BA/MD

Hi,

I got into the 7-yr programs at NJMS(w. BU) and GW, and I'm still deciding between those two. Financially, they are about the same, so that won't be a factor.. I live in NJ, so locally, NJMS would be a better place, but i didn't like its campus at all :[
I'm desperate of advice- Help!

Thanks.

If you don't mind, could you please post your stats?

GW=no mcat. So thumbs up for that. I'm not familiar with UMDNJ but im not an NJ resident so im not applicable anyways.
George Washinton University also has an amazing campus--ive been there and i love the area. I'd push for GW. [thats just me].

i agree with googl-er. i've also visited and i thought that it had a nice campus as well. i've been told that in dc, there are more intern and research opportunities that can't be found elsewhere.

if you decide to go, pm me! i'll be doing the ba/md at GW.

best of luck in making your decision!

thats awesome that you got in sherryg.
Could you also post your stats?
-Im interested in applying.
Thanks

Why you think you were accepted: I think they valued my potential more than my scores. I came to this country just a few years ago with no english but now I'm in top 5 of my class :]
General Comments:
Many people said there'd be no chance of me getting into this program, and I honestly agreed. But guess what- I got in! After all, there's nothing impossible. All you need is a little hope and passion for what you want to do, and if they are genuine, the academic excellence/acheivements will follow. :]

why would people think you wouldnt get in..
2100+ sat and almost perfect gpa. ems puts the cherry on top.
you had/have a better chance than i will.

Congrats to all!

If $$ is not a problem, GW is a better location. If on the other hand, you wish to save money in your undergrad since med schools are comparable in cost, GW is around $40,000/year vs TCNJ - about $22,000/year.

Also, everyone who gets accepted in the NJMS program with TCNJ, gets full tuition paid (approx $8500/year).

stats and numbers don't really mean much (beyond a certain point). admissions is very subjective and it's almost like a game with the admissions committee. something that someone may see as impressive may seem mediocre to another person on the committee. i hate to say it, but in a way it has to do with luck as well. they could have two equally as qualified people, but one has to go, and it's tough luck for the one that doesn't get chosen. i was considering the program with UMDNJ-NJMS, but i was rejected. i was accepted into other programs though (some that are considered better than this one). so if your numbers aren't high enough, don't worry, if you stand out in some extracurricular, you have as much a shot at it as anyone else.

for your reference, if you're curious, i pulled up my stats from a post in the past:

SAT: 760V 780M 750W
SATII: 800 MathII, 780 USHist, 770 Chem, 760 BioM
GPA: 3.98UW, 4.425W
Rank: about top 2.5% in a class of 760 students (you do the math)
Classes: in freshman and sophomore year i took all honors classes, in junior and senior year took 8 AP Classes overall, got 5s in all the APs I took
School Activities: Varsity Boys Tennis since freshman year, State-level Orchestras, Yearbook Editor, member of National Honor Society and Math Honor Society, active in Key Club, performed instruments in many after school functions
ECs: Active volunteer at a Rescue Squad, very active in my church (taught Sunday school several times, led small groups at the youth group, led small groups at a summer camp), more state-level orchestras, other music/orchestra related activities, placed at several tennis tournaments, took part in a mini-medical school at UMDNJ-RobertWood, participated at the NYLF-Med (i know this isn't much, but it shows my interest in med)
Med Exposure: my uncle is a cardiothoracic surgeon, my mom is a RN (mentioned it in 1 or 2 essays)
Essays: mostly wrote about my experiences at the Rescue Squad, also wrote about some personal experiences that affected me, i got my essays reviewed by a friend who went to princeton and is now in med school, he had also helped review the essays of another friend who is currently in the Rice/Baylor program
Recs: didn't read them, but from what i heard at interviews, my teachers really liked me and thought highly of me
