Umiami vs. Penn State (Smeal) vs. UMaryland

Hey guys,Im looking to be a business major and am skeptical about my chances at Villanova.

I have a huge decision to make soon and need all the information I can get about the schools I'm considering attending. I'm mainly looking at Umiami--School of Business, Penn State--Smeal, and Univeristy of Maryland--College Park...I'd have to go during the summer for Penn State but Id heard thats actually fun so I guess I won't mind it too much. I live in New Jersey btw. Any positives and negatives listed about any school will be greatly appreciated and it would also be awesome if you could try and sell me a school.

BU, Rutgers, Binghamton, Syracuse are some other programs I've gotten into but am not as interested in.

UMiami, smaller class sizes and a former Wharton Dean.

Some will disagree, but paying OOS tuition for a state school is really not that good a value unless the OOS tuition is discounted in some way.

thanks a lot Baghdad, i still need some other opinions, i need all the help i can get. Any students who go to these schools with something to say?

The question I’d ask you is where do you want to work when you first get out of school? Undergrad business schools are regional in nature, the strongest recruiting and networks exist in their own backyards. At PSU & Maryland you’ll be exposed to more opportunities in the Northeast, at Miami the emphasis will be on the Southeast with an international influence oriented toward South America. That doesn’t mean you won’t be able to go home to NJ and find a job, it’s just that the on-campus recruiting at Miami will be stronger for that region.

FWIW, the administration under Donna Shalala has made great strides in improving the academic profile of Miami. The new head of the Medical program is from Michigan, the new head of the already strong Marine Sciences department is from Duke and as BaghDAD points out the B-School dean is from Wharton. Regardless of what you may think of her politics, this is a similar upgrade of perception that she achieved at Wisconsin.

Disclaimer: I’m biased in favor of Miami. My son graduated from “The U” in December and has a job in his chosen field of Marine Sciences.

Maryland is a great school, more selective than Penn State.
