UMich Application - HELP

Hi everyone,
After receiving my scores from the SAT, I would really like to go to U of M. I was hoping people could give me information regarding my chances to get in. Here are my credentials:

-Class Rank 2/775
-4.0 unweighted 4.056 weighted GPA
-SAT score of 1400
-9 Total AP classes by the end of high school (I have a very rigorous schedule according to many counselors and teachers)
-Numerous clubs (i.e. Model UN, NHS (president), Teen Court, Link Crew)
-Work for my school’s technical crew (behind the scenes lighting and sound for musicals and concerts)
-Varisty Tennis for 3 years, JV Track and Field for 1
-Over 60 volunteer hours including the required 40/year for NHS

I plan on double major in Chemistry and chemical engoneering. I am a resident of Michigan and would prefer to stay in state so MSU Honor’s College is my back up. I really want to get into UMich due to the academic credentials they have, but I am worried about acceptance. Thanks for the help!

Being instate, I think you have a chance but have your matches and safeties. We are out of state and our valedictorian was wait listed. He was a national merit finalist and had amazing ECs.

Be sure to look into the specific requirements of double majoring and which college (Arts and Letters or Engineering) you should apply to.

1400 is low for Michigan engineering or Michigan generally. . I would take it again and might want to try the Act also since some are better on one vs the other regardless what your school offers. Everything else looks good. You are actually lower than then Michigan State honors also but I know that they tend to be more forgiving… Keep in mind that both schools of engineering are taking higher profile students and it looks like this trend is only going to continue so you might as well put yourself in the best situation you can… Your almost there… Also look up naviance for your school and see what the trend is.

Your stats are higher than mine (in state) and I was accepted to both UM and MSU Honors last fall.

098123Student, were you admitted into the CoE?

@Blaubach

What was your math section score? Have you taken a math subject test? How have your AP Math/Science scores been?

@Alexandre LSA

Chemistry is LSA
Chemical Engineering is COE

@Blaubach Keep that in mind when deciding which college you apply to.

098123student, LSA is a little less selective than engineering. That’s not just at Michigan. It is the case at most universities. If I were Blaubach, I would apply to LSA as a Chemistry major, and then switch to Engineering once at Michigan.

Even though UM doesn’t use rank, a rank of 2/775 indicates your scores are likely high for your school - which works to your advantage in a holistic process for in-state applicants.

I scored a 740 in math

With 9 APs, how is the weighted GPA only 4.056 while unweighted is 4.0? Is there a typo?

Unfortunately no, my school gives a .5 GPA boost attached to one semester of an AP class. I have received high A’s in every single class I have taken.

That weighted GPA doesn’t make any sense to me, either, but it won’t matter for UM since they won’t consider it anyways and will recalculate the unweighted GPA to their own scale. I agree to get the SAT up a little and/or take the ACT as well and aim for a 34+ if you want engineering at some point. I also agree that applying to LSA initially is easier, but also make sure you will be able to make the transfer or add the double major later. Also take the subject tests for math and chemistry and get at least a 750 on each.
