Umich-Dearborn vs Baruch for Finance/Econ

I am currently a student at Eastern Michigan University. I always had hopes to transfer to the University of Michigan but due to medical problems my grades took a severe hit towards the beginning of college and I had to take almost two years off. During my time off (once I was well again) I worked for a start-up and later did marketing and sales for a health care staffing company. Ideally I would like to break into banking, but without the courses and networking of a target school this will be damn near impossible. I have been back in school for three semesters and since resuming classes I have maintained above a 3.8 in every term.

Eastern has limited opportunities when it comes to internships and alumni resources. I have been working on building my personal network, but as of right now it consists mainly of consultants. At this point I have the opportunity to either transfer to
University of Michigan-Dearborn or CUNY Baruch.

Many say that Umich- Dearborn will offer me the Michigan name which will open up many doors in the future. However, there is a significant difference in the courses offered in Ann Arbor vs those at Dearborn -there is a reason Ann Arbor's admissions are more competitive. So how is it valid to say Umich-Dearborn is the MICHIGAN name which is recognized around the world?

Baruch on the other hand is located in NYC and has been starting to get recruitment from JP Morgan and some of the big 4. However, this recruitment is mainly for back office positions. Would it be worth it to attend Baruch, work as hard I can and to attain good work experience and then shoot for a top MBA program? Will my opportunities be greater at Baruch vs. Dearborn?

Some people are suggesting that I stay at Dearborn for a few semesters, do well and then try to transfer to Ann Arbor. I applied last term and was rejected. With close to 60 credits I doubt the admissions committee will change their minds when I add on two more semesters worth of credits. The assistant director of admissions from Ann Arbor once told me that once a student has well over 70 credits, they no longer think transferring is in the students best interest.

I am also trying to decide if it would be best to pursue Econ or finance. According to my credit evaluation from Dearborn it would take me significantly longer to complete a degree in finance rather than Econ. I still have not received my credit evaluation from Baruch (I heard this takes a while).

Any insight would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

I have two questions:
First, where do you want to live?
Secondly, What is the cost of each school, net of scholarship?

Hello Taxguy,

Thanks for your response.

I would like to live in NYC for a few years and eventually settle down on the west coast.

Baruch: $6,120 (12 credits)
Umich- Dearborn: $4,860 (12 credits)

As of right now I will be receiving financial aid at both schools. I am waiting to receive the financial/scholarship official offers from Baruch, but will be fully covered -by aid at Dearborn.

I would be able to commute from my parents house for Umich-Dearborn, but would have to factor in NYC cost of living for Baruch. I have estimated a bare minimum of $16K per year just for rent and utilities. I would have to complete about 4 semesters at either school.

When I became unwell I had to move back to my parents house and it has now been two years. I am lucky to have a great relationship with them - so living at home is not unbearable. I am however, very independent minded and had different plans for this part of my life. I am 23 and am starting to become accustomed to the comforts of home. I feel like I am becoming too dependent on the parents and am starting to fear that I’ll become so comfortable that I won’t leave Michigan in the future - especially if its drastically more difficult to find work out of state as a Dearborn grad. I do not expect NYC to be easy at all. In fact, I expect things to become much more difficult. Part of me believes that these challenges are necessary for personal growth. If it is true that networking and resources are greater at Baruch- I think it would only add to the advantages of taking the leap.

I have dreamed about the NYC for as long as I can remember- the culture, opportunity. Alot of people I know hate the hustle and bustle of it all, but I love it. Whenever I’m in the city I feel so much more energized. I visit often and took a few certification courses out there. I also worked for a corporate wellness company based out of the city, as their MI rep. I simply never imagined my move there to be as a student while accumulating debt.

My dream school was Umich Ann Arbor- I just don’t know if transferring from Dearborn is a realistic expectation to carry.

I also have been accepted to the following schools- both are financially out of the question and Marymount lacks an actual business school, as it is a liberal arts school.

Marymount Manhattan College ($12,000/ term)
University of San Francisco ($19,000/ term)

As an undergraduate at Dearborn, can you participate in career fairs at Ann Arbor? Will you have any recurring health issues in the next 2 years?

Instead of spending 2 years at Baruch & spending roughly $32-35K, perhaps you may consider finishing the remaining 2 years at Dearborn without incurring any debt, and applying for any of the 1 year MS programs in business.

The added benefit would be in gaining valuable contacts while pursuing the coursework in MS, and becoming more marketable.

Perhaps, it may be more beneficial to explore other affordable part time MS/MBA options on the west coast, since that is your target work destination.
