Hello!

I am currently a junior and still deciding what i want to pursue. I've heard that michigan's engineering program is wonderful. I am mainly interested in the Computer Science department. I was wondering what types of things that will make it great for me:
This may be best answered by people currently in or people who have graduated from the program:

Is there a lot of internship/research opportunities?

Is it easier to get a good job coming out of bachelors? And will salaries be any higher compared to other schools, or will the Masters program make the difference when it comes to salary?

Are there any top-tier engineering/tech companies that like Michigan?

And of course, your opinion of UMich engineering if you graduated(quality of education, enjoyment, experience, etc.)

Thank You!!

Is there a lot of internship/research opportunities?
yes there are many opportunities, but you have to look for it. You would also have to compete sometimes against your peers for those jobs.

Is it easier to get a good job coming out of bachelors? And will salaries be any higher compared to other schools, or will the Masters program make the difference when it comes to salary?
masters will give you a slight salary bump, but it’s also an extra 1-2 years of investment, so pursue wisely. I have lot of friends doing masters (after UM bachelors) in 1 year.

Are there any top-tier engineering/tech companies that like Michigan?
A better question would be: Are there any top-tier engineering/tech companies that dislike Michigan?
No.

And of course, your opinion of UMich engineering if you graduated(quality of education, enjoyment, experience, etc.)
I just graduated, and I’m very content. The school provided more than everything that I needed to succeed, and all you gotta do is take advantage of it. :)

The EECS department at UM is very good with lots of great professors and smart students. Internship and full-time opportunities for EECS student are aplenty in most industries including the financial industry, Automobile, consumer goods, consulting, start ups etc. In fact, the career fair in the college of engineering has predominantly most job positions for Computer Science students so you should be in good demand!

However, keep in mind that EECS is one of the most hardest majors in the College of Engineering. Even if you breezed through Engr 101, EECs 280 is an entirely different ball game and a very time consuming course. EECS 281 and EECS 381 are one of the most hardest courses in all of engineering and even the smartest programmers who have been coding all their life since high school struggle immensely with it and it is very time consuming. Other EECS courses are also difficultl.

I don’t mean to scare you but you should be prepared that you will have to work very hard and put in a lot of effort to succeed. Do remember that the rewards of a CS degree are definitely worth it though.

Good Luck!
