This has been a great discussion! My S decided to attend Michigan this fall after meeting with a math professor during the student acceptance day. As OOSers we know the strong reputation Michigan holds on a national level and that is especially telling being that we live on the east coast where the desire amoung high schoolers to attend the Ivies is very strong. Anyway, he came back from Michigan and there was no doubt in his mind that that was where he was going. I've been reading CC everyday, just to become a little more informed about the school. If I wasn't convinced it was a good choice before, I certainly am now!

3x:
Your son won't regret his decision. Three and a half years ago we received a wonderful letter describing how the Umich math department wanted to create something special in the math department and wanted my son to be part of it. Ann Arbor's a long way from his home in PA, but beginning with our first campus visit it was love at first sight. Now, going into his senior year, we couldn't be more pleased with his experience. The pure math community has challenged him and supported him and provided opportunities that few universities can match. He's competed in prestigous competitions, attended REUs. He's been taking graduate level courses beginning in his sophomore year. This year, as a junior, he was given the opportunity to be a T/A for Calculus 295. He's gotten to know several professors on a personal level. There seems to be a friendly competition between him and his peers. I can't imagine that there would have been a better place for him to grow as a mathematician than as a undergraduate in the Umich math department.

toointeresteddad,

My son had your son as his T/A . My son spoke very highly of him ("great guy") as I was looking forward to meeting him at the Math awards on Friday but he wasn't there.

Small world....

Isn't CC great?

Hehe, toointeresteddad's son is a great guy. I was kind of sad that he left for Pennsylvania the week I'm staying in Ann Arbor, but the upside is I got to borrow his apartment, lol.

The plot thickens!

LOL. He'll probably won't be thrilled to know he's being talked about on CC. We were sorry to miss the awards this year. We enjoyed it last year.

wow. im starting to think i made a mistake turning down michigan pure maths.

Rankings aside, if you truly love UMich, you should go there.
