I got an invitation to the honors program inviting me to apply. My mother called up the school and swears that only 8 percent of students who are ACCEPTED to UMich are invited to apply to honors, and just about everyone invited to apply gets in once they apply. Someone who is sure of what they r talking about please tell me if this is true or not. Thank you for your help.

8 percent of the class sounds about right for being IN honors. idk about being invited.

yeah I agree with you. But no one seems to know the percentage of accepted applicants invited to apply.

About 500 kids in each class are in the Honors Program. But being invited to apply doesn't mean much - anyone who wants to can apply, whether they were invited or not.

is there an engineering honors? or is it only LSA?

Just LSA.___

That number is misleading. 8% of all students at Michigan are part of the Honors college. However, the colleges of Engineering, Kinesiology, Music and Nursing do not have honors programs. Only LSA students can belong to the honors college. So more than 8% of LSA students belong to the honors program (more like 12%-15%), which is pretty impresive when you consider that the average high school GPA of those students was a 4.0 (unweighed), the average high school class rank of those students was in the top 1% and the average SAT of those students was roughly 1480.

How does umich honors compare to the likes of Berkeley etc... in quality? Is UMich's notoriously large class sizes in majors like econ overriden by the honors program?

Michigan classes (honors or otherwise) are no larger than those at other universities.

BUT honors classes are incredibly smaller than normal ones. for instance, intro to psych is usually about 400+ kids, but honors intro to psych is apparently about 20.

doesn't everyone get an invitation to apply?

nope. only if your test scores fall within the average range of past honors program stats.

o sweet
i though everyone did
now i feel special :)
lol

Has anyone been accepted to the Honors Program yet? I applied on 11/26, and apparently it takes them about 3 weeks to review your application

^
don't get your hopes up after three weeks. it's more like a couple months.
you could also get deffered to honors...they don't tell you... and then get in later... after a 2-3 months.

even though on the website it says three weeks?

does anyone know the scores you might need to qualify? or at least where i could find them?

thank you!!

Re: the 3 week turnaround- my D emailed the essay one Sunday evening- in less than 24 hours she had a response- accepted. I think they consider the essay along with the remainder of your app. I guess what I'm saying is if you're a strong candidate it probably won't take 3 weeks.
