For those got into honors without the essay, did you still email them or did they just accept you?

I was about to send them my essay but they sent me a letter already :P. I think the trick was that my admissions essay was bascially what they were looking for anyways so they took that.

so do we get some money or do we just have the "privilege" of taking harder core classes?

You don't get money. You get better dorms and classes though.

so if you're not notified by April 1st, you're not in, right?

The Campus Day spiel I heard was that the honors acceptances were targeted to get out by April 1, if the essay had been submitted by the first week in March. They will continue to consider and admit past that date. I don't know what they will tell waitlisted people by that date, but it would make sense that they will have spaces available for all the people that they have admitted who choose other schools instead. That would mean that spaces might be opened up between April 1 and May 1. The thing to remember is that there is not enough space set aside in South Quad for all the honors kids, so that is first come first served.

"so if you're not notified by April 1st, you're not in, right?"

Nothing in life is so concrete. The majority of admitted students should get their answer by the first week of April. However, some may hear will get their answers in mid-April or even late April. Remember that 27,000+ students applied to Michigan this year and Michigan has to accept 12,000 of those, so it takes time and some admitted students will not hear back on time.

Were those who got into the honors notified by email or mail ?

I was told by the Honors people when I called that decisions go in regular mail.

I know someone who sent his essay 20 days ago and got the decision yesterday. So fast

My son sent his essay via e-mail on a Saturday and received a letter accepting him into honors the following Friday. Turnaround was just under a week.(!)

This was about two weeks ago.

I got denied today. Submitted the essay in late december.

I think you needed at least a 34 act to get into without something special

Haha well, I certainly didn't have a 34... they said they sent my decision in the mail yesterday, but they can't tell me over the phone. Apparently I should have it by Friday... lame. It's so a rejection, I'm sure.

i still hear nothing now

I submitted my essay march 18, got the acceptance in the mail march 28 (yesterday).

10 days!!

Very happy about this, since I was rejected from Brown and Cornell today...

FWIW, my grades weren't that good. I had a 33 on the ACT. My essays were relatively strong, and might have been what they were looking for.

I got into Ross pre-admit but rejected from the honors program. is that possible?

Yes, it is psosible. Honors is more formulaic than Ross.

i submitted my essay about 20 days ago. If i don't hear anything from them in mid April, does that mean I am deferred or probably rejected?

i was just accepted into LSA and have requested that i be considered for honors. is there still a chance that i'll be considered? when is the deadline for essay? i have yet to receive the essay question.

jth11688:

here is what you need to know:

Describe a topic or subject--something specific, not a broad academic area like biology or history--in which you have developed an intense interest. Tell us what fascinates you about this topic or subject in a way that might lead someone else to be fascinated also.

Describe a topic or subject--something specific--not a broad academic area like biology or history--that you would like to learn more about. (We recognize that it may be difficult to be too specific about something you don't yet know much about.) Tell us what intrigues you about this subject in a way that might lead someone else to be intrigued by it also.

On a regular basis, the Honors Program schedules events, both large and small, designed to get students and faculty together (usually over lunch or late-afternoon snacks) to talk over significant ideas and issues of our time. Sometimes faculty or visiting celebrities come to share their expertise as a springboard for the discussion of important topics; sometimes students read specific texts to have a shared basis for discussion. If you were on our student planning board, what topic, issue, or idea would you propose for one of these events? Write a proposal for such a program: describe the topic or idea you’d like to have discussed, tell why that idea is important and/or intriguing. If you know of any resources (people, texts, other media) that would contribute to or help students prepare for the discussion, you may feel free to suggest those resources. You don’t need to be an expert on the subject yourself, just tell us why it’s intriguing to you and how you’d like to organize the discussion about it. The idea need not be academic, nor the topic safe: we’re not afraid of controversy, and we know that important issues arise in every area of our culture.
