Hey guys... If you could help me out-
If one were to attend Umich LSA honors college, are there any extra financial benefits, compared to the normal package?
My mom was telling me how the school would perhaps, give an Honors student more merit-based scholarships.. is this true??
thanks a bunch

"Perhaps" yes. However, it is not a given. There is not rule or policy at Michigan that automatically or necessarily gives out merit scholarships to all Honors students. Some Honors students get awesome merit-based sholies and others don't get a penny. It is really a question of luck...and a question of timing. I hope you applied before December 1.

Ohh Icic. thanks so much Alexandre!

Wow, was it advantageous to apply before December 1st? I didn't know that. I submitted my honors app in late December. Might that have hurt my chances?

He means applied to Umich before December 1st, not specifically the Honors college.

wait...what difference does it make to apply after dec 1? do you get like...more consideration for honors or something?

The question is about financial aid, so when Alexandre refers to applying before Dec. 1st, he is pointing out the date that apps should be in if you want full consideration for scholarships. Submitting your app any later may hinder your chances of getting a scholarship seeing as they get distributed on a rolling basis.

Accepted to honors!!! Today by snail mail.

In my opinion (as an Honors student), Honors really restricts which classes you can take because you must take two honors classes per semester.

I stayed in it for a second semester because I figured I was going to transfer out of LSA next year and I might as well be able to say that I was in Honors on the b-school application if I choose to fill it out.

Does notification of Honors acceptance come exclusively through snail mail? Shouldn't we be notified before housing information is distributed?

I haven't heard anything yet. :(

I'm rooting for you epsilon9090! I can tell you'd perk the place up a bit.

what do you guys think about honors? is it really worth it? and dsmo, how hard are the honors classes?

Depends from class to class, instructor to instructor. With emphasis being placed on the instructor part of the equation.

Ahhh I just really need to know whether or not I got in. Is it true that we'll know by the time housing information is sent out?

I just called, and apparently I've been waitlisted and will be notified by the first of April. Not that bad of a wait, I just hate being waitlisted like that... oh well. Hopefully I get in though. For everyone else, they said that they will be continuing to make decisions on honors through the end of April.

Daughter finally submitted her essay the first week in March, and got a letter of invitation today, so they are acting fairly quickly once the essay is received. As I said in an earlier post, they are deferring/waitlisting quite a few, so if you haven't heard within a few weeks time, that is probably what is happening.

we had to write an essay for honors consideration? I thought we just applied and they'd let us know if we got in??

Everyone is considered automatically, but your chances are increased if you write the essay. Those who write essays are given first consideration.

i got the honors acceptance letter today! no essay* ; ]
