Hi all! : ) I actually posted in both of the schools' threads, but some kind folks redirected me over to the music major thread, and here I am!

UMich and Northwestern are two of the schools I've been accepted to for vocal performance, and I'm basically trying to get some information and some questions I have answered on both of them. If anyone can give me information about these two programs (UNDERGRADUATE), can you please help me? I've perused through both websites but I'd like some feedback/answers from posters who would know.

Are the undergraduate vocal performance programs at UM and NW VERY strong ones? Do undergraduates get plenty of performance opportunities, and if so, where (operas, opera workshops, recitals, etcetcetc.) Non-biased answers, pleasepleaseplease!!!

Try a private message to obsessivecollege who has a daughter as a vp major at Northwestern. kmcmom13 has a son at UMich, in music but not vp. Give her a shot as well, she may be able to put you in touch with a few current students.

This is not my personal first hand experience, but this is from what I heard from a very good friend that attends UMich as a Freshman Undergrad in Voice, that she is very happy with her choice. She feels like she has gotten ton of performance so far with doing masterclasses, choir performances and ect. From what I heard is that you really won’t get opera experience until later in your undergrad, but this would be the same for Northwestern. I by no means know if this is true, but from my friends experience, it was a very positive choice. Hope all goes well.

^Hi again. I actually directed Naia here because I have no experience in vocal programs, but what MezzoGirl says is generally the hearsay I’ve gathered as well. UMich actually has in excess of 400 concerts/recitals/plays etc. each year and I can’t imagine that there’s any shortage of performance opportunity – but I don’t know the inner workings of the vp dept. (and more specifically, opera) to know whether there’s any issue re: grad students getting the parts (like we occasionally hear of other schools.) I am less familiar with Northwestern as son eliminated that particular program early on, but I would expect the programs to be peers.

Naia, are you from the U.S. or are you an international student? The two campuses are quite different; I’d strongly encourage a visit if it’s viable!
