UMich Vocal Performance Admissions?

I was wondering if anyone who has applied to the voice program at University of Michigan SMTD has heard back regarding an admissions decision yet? I auditioned on Feb 15th, and haven't heard anything. I know several other music applicants (not vocal performance majors) who have already been notified, and was just wondering if there are any VP's who have actually heard from the school. I know that notifications and decisions are dependent on the instrumental department, so maybe the voice department has not officially met to discuss who they will admit, and since it's spring break, vocal performance majors won't know until end of March? Any light that anyone can shed is greatly appreciated! :)

Hi mezzo13, my D auditioned that day as well, and we have not heard anything either. Her friend who auditioned on Feb. 1 has already gotten his acceptance letter (but that was over a week ago).

Did you go to the meeting for people auditioning for Voice? They said in that meeting they were meeting two weeks from that day, which would have been this past Friday, which would be right before their break began. So, it sounds like decisions have been made, but maybe we all have to wait until they get back from break OR they’re in the mail and we just have to be patient. It’s really nerve-wracking for us too!!!

saxlady, thanks for the helpful reply! I was at that meeting, but didn’t remember what you mentioned about the department meeting two weeks after the audition date (all of these meetings on audition days start to run together!) I appreciate you refreshing my memory regarding what exactly they said about sending out decisions, as I didn’t remember that until you said it! It would make sense then if results are posted on Wolverine Access sometime this week, or possibly when the faculty gets back from break next week.

I will keep dutifully checking Wolverine Access in the meantime! Good luck to you and your daughter with your wait, as well!! :)

D auditioned on Jan 18 and we were told at the parent meeting that decisions would be made about six weeks from then. About three weeks ago, D (and her friend who auditioned the same day) received an email saying that they had decided to delay decision making until they had heard all auditions. The new date we are waiting on is April 1st. Since saxlady heard of another applicant who auditioned later than D and was accepted, I’m now guessing D is on some kind of purgatorial waiting list (I suppose the auditioners think it’s ok for them to wait and see if someone better comes along). It was a weird email that really told us nothing at all–other than stating that this was really “good news”. That’s not the way we saw it though!

Don’t be so sure about being on a waiting list. This person was 1) a tenor and 2) music Ed, so maybe it’s different criteria or waiting time for boys and/or music ed.

Thanks, Saxlady, that’s good to know. UMich was D’s top choice, but other auditions she has attended at other schools, plus the long wait for a response, have bumped it down her list. Since UMich was her #1, she might have canceled other auditions if she had received an early acceptance. Instead, she got to visit some great schools where she feels she will fit in. It’s all for the best–we just hope she lands in a school that suits her (and wants her!). With one more audition to go, we’re reconciled to waiting. . .

My D also auditioned on 1/18, and we received that same “good news” email on 2/15. D spoke to SMTD Admissions, and they told her that since her audition was on one of the earlier dates, they just needed to hear more people (sopranos) before making final decisions. She was told that the earliest she would now hear would be 3/1, and the latest would be 4/1. It was also mentioned that the reason they call it “good news” is because a lot of rejection letters had been sent out from those earlier audition dates, therefore, getting this email means you are still in the mix. We are all waiting together! Good luck to everyone…

There’s not much point in getting worked up about this because:
A) UM does not use rolling admissions. When everyone has been heard within a certain discipline, the dept meets and makes their decisions.
B) No school is obligated to notify undergrads regarding admissions until April 1st( and at least one major conservatory has not been able to get decisions out until two weeks later than that for the past 5 years!)
C) Grad students will be notified by March 15th

To the best of my knowledge, no VP majors, grad or undergrad, have heard from UM yet.

My D auditioned at U of M on 1/18 and received a phone call on 1/29.

LuvMyMezzo, was the phone call an acceptance? If so, I’m guessing my D is declined or wait-listed, as she auditioned the same date and got an email saying they were making no decisions until April 1.

I auditioned on 2/15 for Voice A and I JUST GOT THE PHONE CALL TODAY WITH A YES!!!
I CAN’T BELIEVE IT!
Good luck to everyone still waiting to hear!!!

Well, that’s not promising for the rest of us, but congratulations MToropera!

Thank you, and hopefully they are still making phone calls!
Im also pretty sure that all decisions are up on Wolverine status as well

Nope, still nothing on Wolverine status for my D - don’t know if that’s good or bad!

Congratulations, MToropera! Saxlady, I’m right there with you and your daughter! I’ve yet to hear anything, and keep checking Wolverine access to no avail. Hopefully we will hear soon. Thanks to everyone else for their input, as well! :)

annie43 - Yes my daughter’s phone call was an acceptence.

Congratulations, luvmymezzo–Michigan sounds like a great school. We’ll keep waiting, but will be mentally prepared for the rejection letter…

Stay positive until they give you reason to do otherwise! If they didn’t decline her - they are still considering her. Good Luck and positive thoughts her way! I know all this waiting can get very mind numbing. Hang in there!!

Well, we FINALLY received a decision from UM. Here is what it said:

Thank you for your application to the University of Michigan School of Music, Theatre & Dance. After an individualized and comprehensive review of your application and all related materials, a decision has been made. We regret that we are not able to offer you a place in our upcoming class at this time, but we would like to extend an offer for you to join our extended waitlist. Please note that our office refers to the waitlist as both the waitlist and the extended waitlist; they are one and the same. You may accept or decline our offer to be placed on the extended waitlist by clicking “Respond Now.”

Any idea what the extended waitlist is? Although they claim it’s “one and the same” as the waitlist, it makes it sound like a much longer list. I don’t know if it’s worth it to accept it. Anybody have experience with or knowledge of this?
