Hi all! Perhaps I didn't look extensively enough, but I didn't find a thread that addressed this specifically, and I'd really appreciate if someone would shed some light on the subject.

If anyone can give me information about the undergraduate voice & opera program at the UM School of Music, can you please help me? I recently was accepted to the UM School of Music for VP, and I've perused through the website but I'd like some feedback/answers from people who would know.

Is the undergraduate vocal performance program at UM a VERY strong one? Do undergraduates get plenty of performance opportunities, and if so, where (operas, opera workshops, recitals, etcetcetc.)

Naiaxd, first off, congratulations! However, small programs of this type aren’t especially well represented on cc – you might try to post over at the MUSIC thread to get feedback from people with more exposure to VP programs.

My son is at the School of Music, which he loves and we feel is excellent. He’s had secondary vocal studios with GSIs (he’s not a vocal major) and felt they were awesome. However, for your purposes as a studio voice major, I’d look for the poster Lorelie, who I believe is a music/voice counselor very familiar with all the voice programs. If you find her, perhaps you could PM her. She might know other VP majors. I do know, of course, that UMich has an excellent track record in VP and MT, but am not as familiar with the opera aspect. Some of the “performance opportunities” will be dependent of course on your voice type, maturity, and whether or not it is actually healthy for an undergrad to perform that part without hurting their development – that’s an issue at all the big VP schools. But better advice than this awaits you if you can find someone more in the know.

Have you had a lesson yet or do you plan to attend an accepted students day? I would strongly recommend you do so; you will find the students very great about giving you the low down
Best wishes in your quest!
