UMich or Rutgers?

I’m currently making the decision of where to go to college for the next 4 and was wondering if there’s a difference between UMich and Rutgers.

The biggest question I have is: Does what school I attend affect the chances of hiring at a Big N Company after graduation?

Some other questions I have:

Is Rutgers seen as much ‘worse’ compared to UMich?

Does location put UMich at a disadvantage and Rutgers at an advantage - in the end, does this balance the two out?

*Some background:

  1. I live in NJ, so the in state vs. out of state tuition is a big difference, which is why I’m wondering if my opportunities for employment/internships will be highly affected by what college I go to
  2. I plan to study Computer Science/Data Sciences

Honesty would be appreciated. Any input is greatly appreciated. (: also kinda new to posting on this platform :stuck_out_tongue:

What is your intended major? What is “a Big N Company”?

I have worked with a small number of people from Rutgers, and a small number of people from Michigan. They have all been very good. I was a graduate student at a highly ranked university and there were a few very good students in the same program who had graduated from Rutgers and at least one who had graduated from Michigan.

I think that they are both very good universities. I do not see the point of paying out of state tuition. However, the details might depend upon your major.

my apologies, I forgot to add that - I plan to major in computer science/data sciences - was wondering if in that case, prestige would make a difference on my opportunities after I graduate

A “Big N Company” is described as top, public tech companies (e.g. facebook, google, apple, etc)

I think these 2 schools have a lot more in common than people realize. If your plan eventually is to work and settle in the northeast then rutgers reputation is good and won’t hold you back. Ok it doesn’t have Ann Arbor and they never win but Rutgers b-ball and football games are pretty fun and raucous.
