Umich Or Unc

Please help, I live in michigan but i want a fresh start. I want to go into pharmacy and both schools have top 5 programs. Is unc reall a cut above the rest in regard to its health science focused campus? What are the special advantages if unc for an african-american female very intereted in progressive social issues?

12 views come on ppl say something!!!

Yes, UNC does have one of the top notch health science depts in the nation. That said, UMich is not a pushover in the field as well. At undergrad level I would say they are very similar in terms of quality. In deciding between the two, you should look more at which culture you may fit in better at. UMich is a huge Big10 school located in cold midwest with great football tradition (maybe they're hitting downward slope right now but), UNC is a medium size public school located in warm south with an aesthetic appeal to the campus. Also, when you talk College B-Ball, you won't be leaving UNC out of the subject discussion. Pick your lifetime reward between these two if you get accepted to either one of them. You can't go wrong with either. Both are public ivies and at the top of the list even amongst public ivies.

Also, you can see what school would be best fit financially if that is a concern. I would apply to both, and then see what happens after that.

yeah i have been accepted to umich and im waiting for unc with my fingers crossed

My D was accepted at both... and opted for UNC... more financial aid, milder winter, smaller campus, great communications program... and she's happy there. No regrets.
Her only problem, coming from a major city, is it is SO SMALL... I don't know about UMich, but forget staying on campus for one of the breaks at UNC... my D did that for the Fall Break and it was a ghost town... very creepy, actually.

I have been accepted to Michigan as well, and am waiting on UNC too lol! I think Scott gave great info in that you can't go wrong with either. Michigan has more international notoriety, just like more people know Berkeley than USC as far as academics are concerned. That being said, UNC is just as great of a school. Just look at your options in the end, and, as a friend of mine said, "once you put on that sweatshirt, don't look back." Both of those schools are awesome, and a degree from either will say much about who you are.

Michigan just seems like the safe thing to do since I live like 45 minutes away and a lot of my friends will go there with me. However, I have never been the type of person to go through the motions, I like to break the mold and be unpredictable.

That's precisely why I don't want to go to Cal or UCLA. BC all the smart kids from my school go there, and I want to do somethin different. So maybe in your case UNC would be best, at least for the broadening your horizons aspect.

if she is going into pharmacy and health sciences, should international notoriety really play a role in the college decision? if you want to base your life on bragging rights, maybe, but there really should be more to life than that.

just keeping everything in perspective...

ok people now things have gotten difficult bc i got into unc, help please!!1

congrats on your acceptances.
love u of michigan and love unc.
if you live in michigan, then you're not gonna be put off by the weather.
here's the thing: unc is a better price OOS.
but if you're in state, then your talking about turning down your in state tuition to pay another 15 K a year plus travel expenses.
with tuition going up every year at UNC, particulalry for OOS, just for undergrad, you/re loking at spending about 70K more.
so i guess you need to think about what kind of broadening experiences you could appreciate for 70K.
i only say this because the only downside of u michigan is its high cost for a public.
you're looking at 2 great schools.
best of luck

Consider the size, too. UNC's mid sized. U Mich is huge. There really are pros and cons to both - to a bigger school, there will be a larger alumni base, and thus theoretically more support from them. But the drawback is that there are so many people, I would feel lost. But I bet it's like UNC - if you're outgoing, you're totally fine. Whatever the case, it's an excellent choice to have in front of you. Good luck. :)

Same position for me - only I'm OOS for both schools. I've got family in Michigan, but I live in Maryland. UNC is cheaper, warmer, smaller, and closer for me, which gives it a bit of an edge over UMich. On the other hand... UMich does have a very slightly better academic reputation. We'll see.

you know, the thing too, jenny, is that if you choose to go to mich, you will have a very unique experience. UNC will def allow you to broaden your horizons geographically, etc., but mich is so huge that it's not like it won't be something new. I'm gonna use my brother, at Berkeley, for an example. My dad grew up in the bay area, and so we often went up and visited the Cal campus. So my brother was very familiar with the school and region when he was accepted; 88% of the students are from CA, so geographically it wouldn't be that different from our own high school in San Diego. However, his frosh year, he had 2 roommates from South Korea (like they were actually from there), he dated a girl who grew up in Italy but had residency in 4 different countries, and played tennis every week with a student from Germany. That's just his frosh year alone; he's now a junior, and has had many similar fulfilling experiences.

Point is, he didn't have to go to another state, another region, to experience something entirely new. The school was big enough to cultivate its own traditions and diversity, to make sure everyone had a unique experience. I think that in the end, that's what you really have to ask yourself; UNC is smaller with less international notoriety than Michigan, so it will not attract the same number of study abroad/internat'l students as Michigan. That being said, it is in a different state with different people, etc., and I'm sure thrives to promote the maximum diversity possible among its student body.

Both are excellent schools, and there really isn't a huge difference academically between them, esp. in the medical field. I guess it all comes down to whether a difference in geographic location is worth the 70k in extra OOS tuition; for some, it will do wonders for them. Others are outgoing enough to make their experience one-of-a-kind no matter where they go.

i really think you should take a step back and try to picture yourself in a year. do you see yourself at unc or michigan...unc's oos price isn't bad by any means and if your family has the money, it shouldn't be an issue deciding on your new home for the next four years

unless price is an issue, i'd really think about where you see yourself going to school.

BUMP THIS THREAD
Update: I am a finalist for a full ride at unc now, and at the end of the month all of us robertson finalists will go down to chapel hill for interviews

Congrats on being a Robertson finalist! I'd say if you get that, you should pick UNC all else being equal. If you don't, is UNC really worth $70k more? I personally don't think so. The student body culture is very different as well- UMich is northern and known for its very liberal leaning student body. Clearly, UNC is southern and much more conservative. Both are good schools - I'd personally choose Michigan all else being equal (costs, program), but everybody has their own opinion and reasons. Did Michigan not offer you any scholarship? I guess since you're in-state they felt like they didn't need to convince you to go since the price tag is already low, but I'm surprised that you're a Robertson finalist and Mich didn't offer you money.

Congratulations, Jenny! As I remember, you were offered a scholarship to Michigan (but not a full ride?). Now you have some great options. All the best with your interviews, etc.

jenny

My congratulations as well for being a Robertson finalist....good luck!

bluedog

UNC...conservative??? What planet have you been living on?....LOL ....UNC is considered to be one of, if not the THE most liberal school "located in" the south.

UNC is not truly "southern" when compared to places like South Carolina, Ole Miss, UGA etc. where the student bodies are certainly far more conservative and far more "southern" for all that that implies in nature. At South Carolina they still refer to the Civil War as the War of Northern Aggression.....My daughter attends school there and I have heard it with my own ears....and the person was not joking.....they still fly the Confederate flag on the lawn of the State Capitol and until five years ago it still flew over the Capitol.

Because the state of North Carolina has had such enormous population growth especially in the Research Triangle, there are now many North Carolinians with roots in the Northeast, Midwest and elsewhere which certainly dramatically impacts the character of the state and its residents. This fact also means that many in-state students have either grown up or spent part of their lives growing up somewhere other than in North Carolina which in its own way dilutes the 82/18 ratio.
