umich orientation

I have contacted the music school but there's still no reponse to my question...I was just wondering if anyone's in the same boat here:

The 8/27~8/31 orientation is mandatory for international students...however, it says on the music school's website that every music student has to attend an orientation (none of the dates coincide with that of the int'l orientation). Does that mean I have to attend two orientations (the one that starts from 8/27 and the one that starts from 9/1?
it would actually be a problem because the theory exam is mandatory for all
and if I attend the orientation after august, how do I submit the private music lesson assignment without all the info I'll receive at orientation?

do choral music ed majors WITH PIANO EMPHASIS have to take the piano placement exam? can i play the same piece? when? (and when's the theory exam?)

how hard is it to transfer to a voice major?

No, the theory exam is not mandatory. In fact, if you ask the Theory dept chair, he will probably tell you that the exam is meant for transfer and graduate students, freshmen are not allowed to take the placement exam (Of course, there are exceptions). For piano placement questions, please refer to your other post. As for private lesson assignment, email the teacher you’d like to have lessons with. As long as the teacher agrees, you are in his/her studio.

Your question was asked in the Michigan SOM Undergrad facebook page:
[Welcome to Facebook](<a href=“Facebook - log in or sign up”>Facebook - log in or sign up)

If you don’t have facebook:
Someone asked: “Do international students have to attend both the international orientation (8/27-8/31)and the music orientation (9/1-9/3)? Are the theory exam and piano placement exam required for undergrad frosh?”

Answer: “Hi…We look forward to meeting you! Yes, you do need to attend BOTH orientation sessions. The piano placement exam is required for incoming freshmen, but the theory placement exam is only for transfer students and graduate students.”

Also, have you tried calling them directly? It’s faster and reliable.

Hope that helps.

Just to add that you sound somehow concerned about having to attend two orientations, but it is to your own benefit to attend as much of each as possible. Since your a SOM major, that will take precedence on the overlap days.

In answer to your question, my son took both the theory exam and piano placement during orientation, and I had the impression that they were required for freshmen. In the case of theory, the issue is that a student could conceivably not be proficient enough for the part 1 theory course, and may need a remedial first.
