UMich vs UIUC (international student)

I have gotten into UIUC LAS for CS+Math, and UMich LSA undeclared but I would do something close to a Math major and CS minor. I have no idea what field/career I want to get into but I love these two subjects and hope to find a career path in college. I am OOS for both but Umich is still a little more expensive (10k more per year). Few things to note: I cannot visit either campus now; I have family in Detroit suburbs. Please do give inputs on which uni I should choose as I am very confused…I must make a decision soon!

$10k per year is still quite significant. I would go with the lower cost. Also, UIUC fixes the tuition for the 4 years, so the difference may be bigger than $40k in 4 years.

If money is not a consideration I would look closely at both programs and how easily you can change majors etc once in your program. I believe UIUC is pretty strict and not easy to transfer in and out of certain majors like cs. I am sure there are Facebook and other groups as well was cc on their site to ask this question. I would also email each department admissions head and start to ask these types of question,so you know what your getting yourself into.

I am familiar with both schools and towns as one sister in Champaign (brother in law is a professor at UIUC, nephew a student there), and myself living in Ann Arbor with several family members affiliated with U of M one way or another.
If you are 100% certain about your major, saving $10k/year at UIUC makes sense. If you are not, U of M would make changes much easier. Being an international student studying in the US, it’s a wonderful thing to have family or family friends not too far away. If money is not a consideration, I would choose U of M. It is an easy car/shuttle ride to Detroit Airport where as you will need to get to Chicago (2-3 hours away depending on traffic) for international flights from UIUC. Ann Arbor is also a much better town than Urbana-Champaign in terms food and culture.

Maybe I am misunderstanding but if you are already in cs then great. If you go out and have to transfer back in… It is not that easy at University of Illinois. If this is what you want to do then I would save the money as they have an outstanding program at Illinois.

If money is tight and attending Michigan will put undue stress on your parents financially, go for UIUC for sure. On the other hand, if your parents can easily afford Michigan, I think Michigan makes better sense. While UIUC is excellent in CS, possibly slightly better than Michigan, the University of Michigan is a better university overall, an it is more conveniently located.
