Summer Activities: Went on a 2-week exchange trip in Japan to learn about culture, tennis camp

Essays (rating 1-10, details): For my Why UMich essay, I wrote about growing up in Michigan and having the college be a big part of my childhood. In addition, I spoke specifically about one of the graduate assistants my sister had as her French teacher. My sister’s in her third year at UMich right now, and she always spoke so highly of this grad assistant, so I talked about how her words really inspired me to look into UMich and its renowned professors. I was pretty proud of being so specific in this essay, but it wasn’t that creative, so I’d give it a 7 or 8. For my other essay, I wrote about my exchange trip in Japan and how being exposed to a whole new culture changed the way I lived my daily life. I really liked this essay, and it really played into my emotions, so I’d give it an 8.

Recommendations (rating 1-10, details):

Teacher Rec #1 (rating 1-10, details): AP Gov teacher - We developed a personal bond over the course of my class, and I was always super passionate and eager to learn and participate. I’m sure he wrote a good rec, so I’d say a 9.
Teacher Rec #2 (rating 1-10, details): AP U.S. History teacher - I had him Sophomore year, and I still see him and talk to him every week or so. He genuinely wants his students to do well, and he’s also my Quiz Bowl coach, so that’s why I asked him for a recommendation letter. I haven’t read it, but I’d think a 9 as well.
Counselor Rec (rating 1-10, details): I had to fill out a super long form for my counselor so that he could write a good recommendation. I’m not sure how it turned out, but my counselor was extremely helpful for my siblings in their college admissions processes. Probably a 7 or so, just b/c he doesn’t know me too well.
Additional Rec (if any) (rating 1-10, details): N/a
Interview (if any) (rating 1-10, details): N/a

Other:
Applied for Financial Aid?: No
Intended Major: Undecided
State (if domestic applicant): Michigan
Country (if international applicant): N/a
School Type: Public
Ethnicity: Asian (Chinese)
Gender: Female
Income Bracket: Prefer not to say
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): N/a

Reflections:
Strengths: Probably my test scores and essays. I really worked hard on my essays and took time to research the school and LSA programs to cite specific facts about UMich.
Weaknesses: My GPA and class rank
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I showed that I was passionate about UMich, and I’m sure they could tell the time I took to actually research the university
Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Accepted to MSU, deferred from UChicago, waiting on UCLA, UCSD, Georgetown, and UBC Vancouver

General Comments (if any): Congrats to everyone who got accepted! And to those who were deferred, don’t lose hope! I was deferred from my parents’ grad school, UChicago, so I know how it might feel. If UMich is really your #1 school, contact your admissions counselor and really stress this fact. They can see your passion and will walk you through the next steps you should take in your application process. Good luck!

Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Everything was qualified for Michigan. I don’t think it was a reach really especially since I applied LSA
Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Deferred from Harvard

General Comments (if any):
Dunno. Honestly for public schools it boils down to the objective part since they have so many applicants. Pretty much all you need from the subjective is for them not to be utter crap.

Weaknesses: recommendations, likely, as well as a lack of leadership positions for my extracurriculars (my school doesn’t offer much in the way of extracurriculars, so a lot of those were projects I just do on my own. Pretty tough to win awards or have leadership experience there)
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I’ve been consistently getting good grades with a tough course load, and I’ve had a 4.0 since 9th grade (I got a few B+s in high school classes I took in 8th grade), and I showed that I was passionate about my major. Plus I’m in state, that probably helped.
