Summer Activities: Continued research, SHAD (selective Canadian educational program), French immersion programme, continued work on startups, playing sports

Essays (rating 1-10, details): Not sure how anybody can rate their own essays. I spent a lot of time and had four separate people comprehensively edit them.
Common App: About creating a water filter for developing countries (which I have won several awards for) and how engineering is about improving the lives of others
Activities Paragraph: talked about research and how it’s developing solutions for different problems
Why Michigan: talked a lot about how it applied to my prior work and business experience with specific course references, etc.; thought it showed interest

Ross Preferred
Business Issue: talked about lack of applicable skills in the workforce and how it relates to the skilled trades and auto industry in my hometown and how i’ve seen that firsthand with startups, etc.
Artifact: Research infographic, talked about self-initiating research in a lab to work on Zika virus without having taken bio or chem (also went to ISEF for this)

Counselor Rec: New as counselor but has known me for several years, probably pretty good
Additional Rec: Supervisor for youth committee I was at
Interview: Pretty good, there was slight language barrier but we connected well and spoke for about an hour and a half about a lot of different things. Like others, would never call this an interview.

Applied for Financial Aid?: No.
Intended Major: Engineering (Biomedical, Electrical, Management) with Ross Preferred Admission
State (if domestic applicant): N/A
Country (if international applicant): Canada
School Type: Private (but not feeder/magnet, just local school)
Ethnicity: Indian/British
Gender: Male
Income Bracket: Doubt I qualify for any financial aid.
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): URM (Hispanic through grandfather)

Strengths: Academics at basically maximum. Honestly I have to say I dedicated myself completely to engineering and thought I did have a pretty strong application, everything fit into engineering and how I talked about how engineering is about improving our society, bringing in to the community stuff.
Weaknesses: High income? Ranked at ISEF but not 1st/2nd place? Maybe they thought I was bs’ing my activities?

Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: To be honest, I gave it everything and have pursued activities that use engineering for basically all my free time. I can’t really fit anything more into my schedule so glad to see it paid off.
Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Deferred from Stanford for engineering.

General Comments: Glad I got in and my effort paid off. Hopefully Ross works out as well. Will see what responses I get from the other elite US schools.

Reflection

Strengths: Leaderships extracurriculars, and my essay
Weaknesses: My grades
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Simply my essays - all my friends who outscored me with their SAT/ACTs as well as GPAs got defered from UMich. I was pretty much the one and only student who knew about this school in great depth.

Essays (rating 1-10, details): Why Michigan (8) Community (8) Activity to Continue (8) I honestly don’t know haha I’m grasping at straws and I think this is where I might have been lacking.
Recommendations (rating 1-10, details): 1. Spanish teacher for 2 years, by far the best teacher I’ve had in high school. 2. Psychology teacher, great teacher and I did a very successful Psychology lab that I designed in her class. These are iffy for me because I don’t talk much in class, but I’m sure they have a generally positive impression of me.

Teacher Rec #1: 8.5?
Teacher Rec #2:8?

I never even thought I could get into Michigan because my GPA and test scores aren’t the strongest and I didn’t take the hardest classes offered at my school. However, I think showing interest in the school and in my major helped a lot as well as working really hard on my essays to show the school exactly what I had to offer.

“Why Michigan?” Essay: 10/10 Easily my best. I have always loved Michigan and although the prompt asks what about the program attracts me, I wrote more generally about Michigan. It was very honest and heartfelt and I did also discuss the program at the end.

Extracurricular Essay: 9/10 I think this one was good but it is so short that I struggled to fit everything in well. I think I emphasized what was needed well and I think my main point, that I wanted to continue making a difference, came across well

Community: 8/10 As someone who isn’t very diverse I think this was my most difficult essay. I had to get creative but I found a community that was a little bit of a stretch (Possibly) but one that I showed leadership in.
