General Comments (if any):
In addition to myself, the 6 of my classmates who applied were deferred as well. Their academic records are similar to mine. I feel as though at least ONE of us was qualified for acceptance, especially since a student from our school was admitted last year in Early Action with far less credentials and a less impressive academic record. Just the way the ball bounces, I suppose.

Don’t apply to LSA because its"easier" engineering was the right choice for me because im strong in math and wasn’t “overqualified” for them. Essays (rating 1-10, details):
Common App - 8/10 – was quite personal and very unique, but I had a hard time fitting everything I wanted to say into just 650 words!!
Supplemental Essays: 10/10-- they were very well-written and personal. I did lots of research for my WHY MICHIGAN essay and talked about programs that I wanted to join, professors I wanted to work with, etc. I definitely think my passion for the school came out in my essays.

Reflection

Strengths: I showed A TON of passion in my extracurriculars and essays
Weaknesses: My ACT score definitely could’ve been higher and I could’ve taken more AP’s
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: I think it came down to my essays. They were very well written and very clearly showed that Michigan was my top choice school. I think my CommonApp essay definitely showed my voice and my personality and what I could bring to the campus. I also met the senior admissions counselor who would read the applications from my school and I talked to her about my essays. I have no idea if she remembered me, but it might have helped!
Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: Michigan State University (match school): Accepted, Central Michigan University(safety school): Accepted. I only applied to UMich, MSU, and CMU. UMich was my reach school.

General Comments: To anyone of the class of 2022 or beyond who’s reading this forum trying to compare your stats to someone else’s on this forum who got accepted, DON’T. JUST BECAUSE YOUR STATS ARE HIGHER/LOWER THAN SOMEONE ON THIS FORUM DOES NOT MEAN YOU WILL AUTOMATICALLY GET ACCEPTED/REJECTED. When I was scrolling through the 2020 results and seeing all these people who got 33s and 34s I got super nervous because I had a measley 29–but this is just proof that they view your applications holistically: you are not just a number to them. Your application is judged ONLY from other students from your high school. Take a deep breath. Stop worrying; it’ll all work out, in the end. Make sure you write fantastic essays, and make sure your true voice shines through and you show that UMich is your top choice school. Make sure you participate in things that you’re truly passionate about, rather than wasting 4 years doing things that you dislike just for the sake of trying to boost up your application. (I’m writing this because this was the kind of advice I needed to see when I was beginning my applications)

To everyone who’s been accepted: Congrats, and GO BLUE! I Can’t wait to attend next year!

Essays (rating 1-10, details):
Common App Essay (9/10) I wrote about a DECA competition in which I used political examples to solve a problem relating to business, fitting in directly with my major. I ended up not placing in the competition; thus, I chose the failure essay prompt. I then elaborated how I used my improved communication and business skills from DECA with my tutoring and NIH internship.
Why Michigan Essay (9.5/10) The essay was organized around the programs in which I wished to partake at Michigan. It could have had some more personal flare, but either than that, the essay was strong.
Community Essay (8/10) I felt like this essay was less organized than my Why Michigan, but definitely had the personal information that was lacking in the other two essays. I talked about the photography community, but I did not address the community prompt directly.

fingers crossed

Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I honestly don’t know. There was one kid from my school who got in with a lower GPA than me and another kid with a lower SAT. Neither one is really that involved either so I honestly just don’t know. My friend who is a student at the school of nursing said that being a guy should help me but who knows.
Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Accepted: Detroit-Mercy, Wayne State. Rejected: Stanford (it was a reach I realize but I’ve always been a die hard Stanford fan)

General Comments (if any):
Really confused as to how me and a bunch of my friends got deferred. I know UMich doesn’t look into class rank but the #2, #5, and #6 kids in my grade all got deferred along with my one friend who got a 34 ACT. We all have pretty good ECs too. Last year, one girl got in early with a 27 so I thought we all had a pretty good shot. We only had 4 get accepted early action compared to last year’s group of 10. Really hoping we all get eventually get in though. I’m just trying not to let it ruin my holidays.

Essays (rating 1-10, details): Personal statement very well written about my developing interest in museums and modern art throughout my life, mentioned move from Oklahoma to PA in elementary school and made some hints to depression which may have been risky, would rate a 7; well researched “why michigan” essay, would say an 8
Recommendations (rating 1-10, details): AP bio teacher who really liked me and wrote my recommendation letter for gov school which apparently worked well considering I got into that, saw that I had a genuine interest in learning but also knew about my depression but was very nice to me about it; AP US History teacher is also cross country coach, NHS advisor, and Model UN advisor so knew me well in and out of school, saw how hard I worked in class and in activities but also saw the worst of my depression, was kind of a father figure to me, very kind; I forget if Michigan required two but if they only needed one then I just sent the AP Bio one

Weaknesses:
My gpa and ranking are trash.I also got C’s in precalc and chem which im pretty sure are pertinent to my major. The teacher recs prrobably werent great.

Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected:

Recommendations (rating 1-10, details): For the most part, a 10 (see below)

Teacher Rec #1 (rating 1-10, details): Physics Teacher: 8. He teaches the most talented kids in the school, so it may have seemed a little bit like I was average, but I’m sure he also highlighted my unique traits, such as my innate curiosity and love of learning.
Teacher Rec #2 (rating 1-10, details): Junior English Teacher: 10. She repeatedly asked me if she could write a letter of rec for me. She told my mother “I hope my daughter turns out like yours.” She told me she spent more time on this letter than she had ever before. Whenever I go see her again, she tells me she really misses me.
Counselor Rec (rating 1-10, details): 8. She doesn’t know me very well, and this is only her second year as my counselor. She knows all my stats though, so I’m sure it showed that I was an exceptional student at the school.
Additional Rec (if any) (rating 1-10, details): Debate coach: 10. I’ve had a unique connection with my debate coach, and he’s really gotten to see my grow over the last four years. He told me that we wrote about how much capacity I have to learn and grow and how much of a leader and thoughtful person he has seen me become.
Interview (if any) (rating 1-10, details): 10. My interviewer said whatever was on his mind. He told me that I was one of the most interesting students he has interviewed and that he wanted me to go to Michigan very badly. He also told me he was going to write the best recommendation that he could.

Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: So far I’ve been deferred from Stanford.

General Comments (if any):
Here’s my two cents. Do not overlook the essays. The essay can be a great way to show your personality and uniqueness. Although the school is not specifically asking “why should we admit you?” write your essay as if it is. For each prompt, show the college a reason to get excited about you.

General Comments (if any):
If you were deferred/rejected, don’t give up hope! As you probably know, you’re qualified to be here. There are just a lot of qualified people. You’ll end up at a great school (although maybe not U-M), and you’ll probably be happy there! A rejection/deferral probably stings, but as is life with selective admissions. I have faith you’ll get in to somewhere great!

Volunteer/Community service: Volunteered at two churches regularly, did a few projects with an organization focusing on areas in poverty, as well as various projects and hours for NHS.
Summer Activities: I didn’t report these but work and summer band
Essays (rating 1-10, details): The one about the community was heartfelt and talked about change over time, talking about my section in band. I think you could see that I was sincere and it meant a lot to me. I’d say 8. The one about UMich was pretty generic, I’d say 7.
Recommendations (rating 1-10, details):

Teacher Rec #1 (rating 1-10, details): AP Lang teacher. Also my advisory teacher, so he’s known me for a few years and has gotten to watch me grow as a person and student. Mostly generic, but he did include what he thought were my strengths, emphasizing the passion he knows I have for learning. 9.
Teacher Rec #2 (rating 1-10, details): AP Calculus teacher. Calculus was a bit of a struggle for me initially (I had to drop from BC to AB), so he was very proud of me for my improvements, and even tried to recruit me for Academic Decathlon. He had a standard template he used, so it was fairly basic, but still good. 7.

Country (if international applicant): N/A
School Type: Public
Ethnicity: White, I put “prefer not to respond”
Gender: Female
Income Bracket: Low Income (I qualify for free/reduced lunch)
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): First generation, low income

Reflections:
Strengths: Balanced work/school/extracurriculars fairly well. I’ve been told colleges love band kids, so maybe my dedication to that had something to do with it.
Weaknesses: One essay sounded very indifferent, I feel like my GPA/test scores were average for UMich.
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: LSA has probably, if not for sure, the largest accepted freshman pool and I’m fairly high-achieving, especially for the general perception of low income, single-parent households. But I really don’t know (I’m elated about it though!)
Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Accepted UIUC (James Scholar), accepted UTexas, accepted OSU, waiting on Northwestern

General Comments (if any): I have been dreaming of UMich since sophomore year and never thought I’d get in, so getting accepted was a phenomenal moment for me. I wish I’d put more personality into the essay about LSA and had further researched the campus before writing it as well. Feels good to prove wrong everyone that said I was stupid to be a “try hard” though.
