Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): numerous relatives have gone here, one currently goes to umich.

I know my stats seem a little low, but I go to a magnet program where approx. 25% of the kids in each grade attend umich every year. Out of about 60-70 kids that applied last year from this program, only 2 got deferred and the rest accepted.

Really disappointed that I got deferred since U of M is my #1, I thought I had a really good shot especially since I’m in-state and a girl applying to COE. This makes me super worried about my RD decisions, I’m scared I’m not going to get in anywhere besides my safety schools.

Son was ACCEPTED to College of Engineering from out of state!

SAT I (breakdown): 1550 (780 math, 770 english) single sitting to get his qualifying score for National Merit Finalist
ACT (breakdown): 34 highest single sitting with a 35 super score (UMich says while they don’t super score, they will look at your best individual scores to get a full sense of your capabilities); 36 Reading, 36 English, 35 Math, 32 Science

Senior Year Course Load: IB English HL, IB Chem HL, IB Physics HL, Theory of Knowledge, IB Math SL, IB History HL
Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): None

Job/Work Experience: Worked 40+ hours per week over the summer in an engineering-related job; currently tutors
Volunteer/Community service: Several hundred hours of volunteer experience; some major-related, some through Scouts, some other
Summer Activities: Summer camp counselor until this summer when he got a job
Essays: 8/10 - I really liked his main Common App essay. It was about how he got this cheap-o car when he was 15 that had been his dream car for years. He set about fixing it up and the essay went into great detail about one particular issue he worked on and it showed his vulnerability, his tenacity, problem-solving, and passion for cars without coming straight out and saying all that.
Teacher Recommendation: I hope they were good!
Counselor Rec: New counselor this year, so I’m assuming it was “run of the mill” type stuff and not great. 5/10
Additional Rec:
Interview: He was offered the HAIL interview, but the person didn’t get in touch with him until after he had tried emailing twice and they finally sent him a Google Calendar notification on a Friday morning that they had scheduled his interview for that night and he already had plans, so he just responded and told them he was sorry he couldn’t make it.
Other: National Merit Semifinalist, DAR Good Citizen Award, makes his own minibikes from scratch and discussed in his essays - may have resonated with Engineering folk

Volunteer/Community service: I volunteer a TON. Every week I volunteer 2 hours at an art studio and 1 hour with an exercise group geared towards young girls.
Summer Activities: Spent my summer working and traveling
Essays: My common app essay was pretty decent. I talked about ageism and my experience with it. My community essay was about my heavy involvement with the One Direction fandom and another related my traveling experience with my volunteer work. My U of M essay talked about my Asian culture and how unique my family is
Teacher Recommendation: I got one from my 11th grade English teacher and my 10th grade geometry teacher (also physics teacher right now). My english class was college-level and I would always stay after class to go over papers, etc., which I think he might’ve mentioned. Geometry teacher is also head of the softball program so she knows me really well.
Counselor Rec: 8/10 I assume pretty good. I talk to her often and I was one of the first to request AP online so she knew that I wanted to take challenging classes and that I was interested in selective schools
Additional Rec:

I got a lot of writing-related awards and was accepted to a prestigious Ivy League summer program. I think my essays were a big help because my GPA and ACT were in the lower end of the average. I related my extracurricular to my major and I think my unique community essay helped as well.

Reflection
Strengths: GPA, SAT, Community Service
Weaknesses: I guess I’m an overqualified out of state kid who did not show enough demonstrated interest. :-/
Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: Rejected from UPenn (Wharton).
What would you have done differently?: Shown more interest.

Other Factors: I am not too surprised by this decision because I heard that Michigan defers lots of overqualified applicants. I will send Michigan an email soon letting them know of my interest.
