UMichigan Ann Arbor EA Class of 2021 Applicants

Eeeee127 - it’s funny that you mention funding at UCs, UNC and UVA. First of all, just google “UC funding” and you will see the mess that that University system is in. UM is financially solid; the UCs are not. Many Califormia residents are being squeezed out of UCs not just by OOS students, but by the fact that the schools are seriously underfunded and cannot offer enough seats in the classes that students need to take. Second, UNC and UVA both have statutorily mandated maximums for OOS students. They are not allowed to have more than about 30% of the class from OOS (and this is not something new, it has always been the case). I would also note that there are probably few or no state university systems that are seeing their funding increased. Most have seen continued significant declines in taxpayer support. Look at the cost of Penn State, for example. The decreased public funding is an issue in just about every state in this country. I doubt UM will ever establish some sort of maximum on OOS students because 1) it strives to be an internationally-recognized University; and 2) it would have to greatly increase tuition for in-state students to meet its funding needs since the state of Michigan is unlikely to increase funding given the financial situation in the state and the population issues.

@jasonfan1234 I’ve seen this a million times. I really hope it’s true

it is true. My school is a very big feeder and our counselors talk directly with officers. With the exception of legacies and athletes, unless your cumulative gpa is atrociously bad (like under 3.5 UMich GPA bad) or your test scores and/or atrociously bad (like under 25 act), then you’re fine from rejection.

Good news for me that they don’t often reject! Means I have a chance to get rejected next year instead! Wooh, go me!

So, does Michigan defer the vast majority of applicants? Particularly IN STATE applicants?

@uofm83 Yes, I got that alumni email. Admittedly…my heart skipped a beat. :slight_smile:

@nasoth the deferrals will come later like at the very end (right before Dec 23). Check your portal first, as @eeeee127 stated. The emails notifications did come out at the end of the day around 4:00 EST, however the portal for my daughter was updated probably around 1:30-2:00 EST. I know that others had their portal updated a little later, so its just a matter of timing when they get to your notification. She applied to CoE and each school does their roll out a little differently.

@UMBluemom thanks so much! Do you know if the portal displays any decision other than accepted? Like will it say deferred on the portal or do you have to wait for an email?

@nasoth portal will say accepted, defer, or deny.

How do you calculate UMich GPA

@nasoth I think that the deferrals again don’t come until the very last wave of notifications for the EA deadline. My daughters friends that were deferred didn’t know until that very last day that they were deferred. She found out about a week before, and they do love to send the notices out on Fridays. Hopefully this helps. Good luck to you and everyone who has applied. Go Blue!

@amarz12 All A’s (A+, A, A-) are 4.0. All B’s (B+, B, B-) are 3.0. ect.

@Zsmerica The deferrals are worse for out of state applicants. The in state EA acceptance rate is around 40%.

@Eeeee127 thanks. Getting more and more nervous. @amarz12 I think they just disregard +'s and –'s. So 90-100=4 80-89=3 70-79=2 and so on. Could be wrong though

@nasoth admissions officer came to our school and said that all a’s (a+,a,a-) are 4.0, all b’s(b+,b,b-) are 3.0 so @APlennox is correct

I’m kind of glad deferrals come out late, at least I’ll be able to brace myself for a few days if I don’t get in on Friday.

whats the oos acceptance rate for ea…approximately

@ab2020 last year it was 24.5% for out of state

@Eeeee127 ok, wb for In state?

@ab2020 42.4% in state last year

About 41% but I feel like that is much too high
