Thanks! Love the profile picture! I have that same logo on a poster in my room (I made sure that I mentioned in my essays that I painted my room maize and blue)! GO BLUE!
Also, according to that article, only about 20% of the applicant pool was in-state. I think that is freakishly low because (at least at my in-state school) everyone is obsessed with getting into UMich or applying there.
@UofMichigan1999 42.4% is not as high as it used to be around 70-80% 10 years ago.
@UofMichigan1999 it’s not really if you think about it. OOS includes 49 other states and international, that accounts for a ton of students.
@UofMichigan1999 michigan only has a few high schools where a ton of people apply to michigan but most of the other schools in michigan are in more remote areas and don’t have that many applicants, and michigan really doesn’t have that many high school students to begin with as the state population is decreasing so 11,000 seems reasonable.
The number of in-state students applying to Michigan has stayed relatively constant, even dropping in some cases. This happens despite more people graduating from Michigan high schools, I suspect because many are intimidated by Michigan’s dropping acceptance rate. The interesting thing is, I think that’s driving up applications from top in-state high schools. For example my high school had about 240 applications last year, and it’s still increasing. I also wanted to say something about tuition. I think someone here said that in-state tuition at Michigan is relatively low, which isn’t really the case. Tuition here is about $14,000 for lower division LSA students, and $15,000 engineering, which is higher than most other places in state. I think it’s a shame that Michigan decided to cut funding for public schools, because it raised in-state tuition and creates an extremely high barrier of entry for OOS students. Hopefully that will change in the future!
I agree, our in-state tuition is relatively high compared to other public schools, i think the average in state tuition for public schools in the us is 11,000 ohio state is like 10,000
Ah! I think I conveyed my passion in my essay, do they favor strongly written essays?
@awo1999 yes essays are an important part of their admissions because they want to know that you are truly interested in going.
@Eeeee127 @awoo777 I go to an Ann Arbor school, and there seems to be a narrative that umich rarely looks at anything other than GPA and ACT, and that they don’t even read essays. The reason being because they just don’t have time. I’m hoping that you guys are right cause I worked really hard on my essays, and I think my common app one is pretty good. I think it might just be top kids getting complacent and not valuing Michigan highly enough. Probably what gets statistically qualified kids deferred!
@nasoth yup top kids get deferred because they show lack of interest in their essays thats why the why umich essay is 500 words and really important many other public schools don’t even have a why school essay, so umich wants to know that you are interested!
@awo1999 Yeah they like passionate essays a lot! Even applicants with high stats may have trouble getting in if it doesn’t seem like they want to be at Michigan through their essays. This is where people got the idea that Michigan automatically defers high stat applicants, if that were true it would be more because they can tell through the essay who’s interested and who’s not.
Do you think the timing is a little strange? Softening the blow perhaps, or do you think all legacies are sent that?
In any event, it seems new, unless people received a similar letter in previous years.
@whizkid98 then i hope they realize how badly i want to go!

If showing passion was that important, that might help counter my semi-lowish GPA.
I forgot to explicitly say umich is my top choice school in my why umich essay but i think it shows through what i write so do you think they will be able to tell?
did you mention umich in your activites (100 words) and communities (250 words) essay?
the why umich essay is important but the community one is seemingly fickle. im not really sure why they require that one.
I did in activities but not in community should i have? my community essay was already kinda long at 279 words
