Hi, I was recently admitted to the the University of Michigan Ann Arbor to the College of Engineering. Although I put my preferred career choice as mechanical engineering, since Michigan does not admit to a major but rather to a college, would it be a problem of I decide to major in computer science from the COE instead?
You would have to fulfill the prerequisite requirements for your new major.
Unlike some other schools, the grade and GPA requirements to change or declare major at Michigan engineering are not too difficult (2.0 or higher GPA with C or higher in each technical course), according to http://advising.engin.umich.edu/declaring-or-changing-major/ and (for CS) https://www.eecs.umich.edu/eecs/undergraduate/computer-science/ , presumably because the majors are not filled to capacity.
If want to study CS in the LS&A division (instead of the engineering division that you are in), you need a 2.5 GPA in prerequisite courses with C or higher in each course, according to http://cs.lsa.umich.edu/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/16_17_cs_lsa.pdf .
All admitted to Michigan officially begin as undecided. You haven’t declared a major yet.
You just have to be in good standing to be admitted to any engineering major (GPA 2.0). Michigan does not have GPA limit on any engineering major. You declare after the middle of sophomore year.
