Our son has been admitted into both business programs. With scholarships, costs are comparable. ASU offers additional honors program, with dedicated (nice) dorm housing/dining/classes with other business honors students and additional perks, along with Leadership Institute. We recognize that there is additional rigor from honors requirements and cost, but wonder if the connection with a smaller population within a large university would make ASU a better choice. UMinn business program is ranked higher, has a better 6 yr grad rate, a better employment percentage, and Minneapolis is a great city.
Great choices, congratulations to your son! One consideration: does he have some preference as to where he might want to live after college? Of course, he can attend either of these schools and go study, work, and live anywhere. However, a lot of recruitment, internships, etc. tend to be regional. So he would be at least a little more likely to find something in the Southwest if he goes to ASU and the Midwest if UMinn. Would he have a preference? Good luck!
Carlson is a highly sought after college but ASU offer is very good and I don’t see a downside. Barrett Honors offers excellent support for its students and it’s hard to beat the weather.
Would he be adverse to starting his career in the southwest and returning to the Midwest later on?
Great insight! Looked at the employment information by region on both university websites: ASU: 69% work in AZ, followed by 12% in CA, 5 Central West, and 4% each in NW and MW. UMn: 79% find employment in MN, and 9% in the MW, and 4% W. So that is definitely a big consideration when deciding between the two.
In addition, the employment rate at Umn Carlson business school was 97.8% within 90 days of graduation this past year (includes graduate school, military, etc.).
I couldn’t find breakout numbers for ASU bus school, but latest stats are 87% for university as a whole.
Freshman retention at Umn business school: 98%, with 83% graduating in 4 years.
I don’t have ASU bus. # specifically for bus school, but university retention # is 86%. Four and six year business school graduation rates are: 54.4% and 69.4% (a bit higher than the university as a whole).
Is there separate data for ASU Barrett employment? The program is very well known and highly regarded in California so I would think an outsized portion of the 12% of all ASU grads employed in CA come from Barrett.
Great input once again!
I just received info on Barrett stats by email. For class of 2016 - 17: 39% grad school, business and med/dental/vet school - 5% each, law school 3%, employment 43%, and other - 6%. Not sure why business school is a separate category from grad school?
Of the 34 listed jobs, 14 were in AZ and 5 were in California. But I’m sure its just a representative sample, highlighting highly recognized corporations.
